To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. MoCAR'rY,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Valve, of which the following is a specification. v
. This invention relates'to valves, and while capable of general use, certain features thereof are particularly applicable to globe valves.
The principal objects of the invention are i to provide such a construction and method of manufacture that the valve can be made out of a plurality of pieces of sheet steel,
. single set of dies valves of several different forms can. be produced; also to provide an improved form of valve and valve stem particularly suited for use with a sheet metal casing. The invention also comprises various improvements in the details of construction.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying? drawing, in whichigure 1 is a side elevation of.a globe .valve constructed according to this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an elevation of a valve construct/ed like that shown in Fig. 1,,
but with one of "the parts reversed so as to alter the shape of the valve, and also show ing other modifications, Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form. A globe valve constructed according to this invention has acasing preferablyconsisting of two main members 10 and 11' which are in a sense complementary to each other, and an intermediate member 12. Each of these members is preferably formed of sheet steel and shaped up in dies. The
- members 10 and 11 are provided with flanges 13 and 14 respectively, which are located at an angle of 45 degrees to the axes of the inlets and outlets 15 thereof. These flanges preferably extend outwardly and are circular in shape. It is provided with a valve seat which may be integral with the walls of the disk, or as shownin Fig. 2, it may consist ofza piece of composition, bronze, nickelbronze, or the like 17 set on the disk and electrically welded or otherwise secured thereto. The ends of the valve 18 may be castings screwed on to the outsides of the outlets and inlets15 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may be welded or otherwise secured to form flanges 19 as shown in Fig. 3. The edges'of the disk are secured to the flanges preferably by electrical welding in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may be bolted or riveted as shown in Fig. 3. Riveting is especially suitable for large sizes. It will be seen that in as sembllng the parts the disk 12 can be placed against the flange 14 and then the flange 13 can be placed against the other side of the disk, and the member 10 turned on the axis of said flange until it comes to the proper position, and then the parts are secured together in any desired way. In this way it will be seen that with a single set of dies for each member a large varialon may be made 1n the shapes and sizes of 'valves to be pro;
duced. On account of the angle of 45 degrees of the flanges the member 10 can be turned to various angles so as to produce elbows, PS, and the like, one ofthe forms in which it can be applied being shown in Fig. 3, and another in Fig. 4.
It will be understood, of course, that while 45 degreesis a most convenient angle, yet *any other angle may be adopted according to the necessities of the case. In order to further change the angle between the outlets 15, another'plan can be adopted according to this invention. This consists in'formlng the members 10 and 11 in the same way as indicated above, and leaving the member 11 in its original shape, but altering the flange 13 so as to permit the two members 10 and 11 to be put togetherwith the outlets at varyin angles to each other. This 1s preferabTy done by turning the flange 13 back in dies or in any other desired way, starting at either the upper or lower edge and working toward the opposite edge on a predeteremined angle. In the form indicated 1n Fig. 1 the member 10 is shown in the position which it would occupy when connected up i l L member is shown with the fiange turned back in this way so as to alter the angle slightly. When this is done all that is necessary to do is to trim off the flange. around the edge and "then unite the pieces as indicated above. The member 21 is then pressed in at 25 to forman annular depression which rojects' into the groove inside and forms-a earing permitting-the valve stem to be turned with-. out moving longitudinally. The valve stem is provided with a screw thread 26- which fits an internally screw-threaded projection 27 on the back of a valve 28. lhis valve is shown as provided with a composition face 39, and it 1s preferably guided so that it cannot turn by; a guide 31. By this construction a non-rotatable valve is provided which will not unnecessarily-wear-the seat, and a most convenient, simple, and inexpensive construction is secured.

consists in placing a tubular member on the valve chamber roper, placing in said tubu lar member-a valve-stem havlng an annular stem, and a groove and formin an annular depression on the outside of sa1d tubular member while the valve-stem is in place projecting into said groove so as to hold the valve-stem in position.
