Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
Application filed. October 19, 1909. Serial No. 523,505.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MCLEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Boxes, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to an improved street box, the object of the invention being to provide an improved box, which can be readily anchored in the ground, which will rigidly secure the cover in position, and prevent its removal by an unauthorized person without the proper key.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the box. Fig. 2, is a similar View of the cover, and Fig. 3, is a sectional view illustrating the manner of looking the cover on the box.
My improved street box comprises a rectangular vertical wall 1, having an outwardly projecting flange or ledge 2, all around the same, around its lower edge adapted to be anchored in the ground to pre vent any vertical movement of the box.
8 represents the cover, which is adapted to be supported upon an internal flange 4, all around the inner face of the wall 1, and disposed below the upper edge of the wall, a distance equal. to the thickness of cover 3,- so thatwhen the latter is in position upon the flange 4t, it will lie flush with the upper edge of the box.
In one corner of the box, a block 5 is provided, and made integral with wall 1. This block has an opening 6, which corresponds to the shape of the lower end of a locking pin or key 7, which latter has a lug 8 projecting at right angles to the body of the pin at the lower end of the pin, and at its upper end has an angular head 9, which latter is made of the same size as the valve stems in the box, so that it can only be turned by a person having the proper key to turn the valve stems in the box. This angular head 9 is seated within a depressed portion or recess 10 in cover 3, so as to be out of the way, and not liable to be injured by an object striking the same. The lower face of this block 5 inclines downwardly and uniformly from its edge toward the corner of the box, so that when the key 7 is in position through this block and is given a turn in either dlrection, it will serve to draw the cover down tightly upon the box and lock it against accidental movement, or movement by design, except when provided with the proper key.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A street box comprising a vertical, rectangular wall, an integral outwardly projecting flange at the lower edge of said wall, an inwardly projecting flange on the inner face of the wall, spaced from the upper edge of the wall a distance equal to the thickness of the cover, a block integral with the box of general triangular form in one corner of the box, the upper face of said block being horizontal, and the lower face inclined downwardly from its free to its attached edges, said block having an opening therein, a cover adapted to fit within the box and rest upon the internal flange, one corner of said cover being depressed and provided with an opening, a key located in the openings in the cover and in the block, an angular head on the upper end of said key, and a lug on the lower end of the key adapting, when the key is turned in either direction away from its entering posit-ion, to exert a cam action against the lower face of the block and securely hold the cover in the box.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IVILLIAM MOLEAN.
