To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY NORMAN LnAsK, a British subject, residing at Manchester, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improve.
ments in and Relating to Charging Doors for Refuse-Destructors and other Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to charging doors for refuse destructors and other furnaces which are charged from above and is designed to provide a door of simple construction and one which cannot get out of order.
It consists essentially in mounting or supporting the door on cranks carried by a carriage, which cranks rotate with the carriage wheels, so that when the carriage is moved from the closed position of the door, the door is lifted by the cranks and carried along-in a cycloidal curve-out of the closed position into the open one.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show its application to a refuse destructor.

The furnace A may be of any suitable or ordinary construction provided with an opening B at the top or summit of the furnace through which the furnace is charged. The hopper or chute C containing the charge or through which it is fed to the furnace and which may be a fixture or movable is arranged over the charging opening, space being allowed between the opening B and the chute O to allow of the passage of a truck or carriage D. Rails or runways E are placed upon the top of the furnace upon which the truck or carriage D runs.
The rails or runways E preferably consist of racks as shown in the drawings the wheels of the truck or carriage D being formed with teeth, so that the carriagecannot run irregularly and so that the door which is hung from the wheels as described below when closed may be always deposited in its correct place.
The carriage D is preferably of frame construction and the wheels F are mounted independently of one another inside their bearings G on independent short axles 9 only sufficiently long to carry the wheels F so that the whole of the space between the wheels is quite clear.
The door H for closing the opening B of the furnace is carried by cranks J mounted on the inner side of the wheels F, preferably as near their periphery as possible, in such a manner that when the carriage is moved and the wheels rotated the door is moved in a cycloidal curve. The position of the wheels F and door H is so arranged that the door normally closes the opening B as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the carriage is moved away the door is lifted from the opening and carried away therefrom into the position shown in Fig. 1, leaving the opening free for charging.
If desired the rails or runways for the carriage D may be arranged above the top of the furnace in which case the door H may be swung from the cranks J by means of links. In this case the wheels may be arranged on the outer side of the bearings G if desired and the cranks J on the outer side of the wheels.
Instead of complete wheels half wheels or sectors may be employed for the carriage.
When a fixed fuel container or hopper is employed the carriage preferably carries a second door or plate M on the upper side which normally closes or forms the bottom of the fuel container so that when it is withdrawn the fuel in the container is allowed to fall into the furnace.
The carriage D also carries a chute L which is moved into position over the furnace opening B, when the door is opened, to receive and direct the charge into the furnace, as it falls from the chute or hopper C. One side N of the chute L is hinged at O to the side of the container or hopper G which normally is pushed to one side by the carriage but when the carriage is withdrawn and the door opened the side falls into operative position to direct the material as the hopper C opens.
A catch may be provided on the carriage which engages a bar, snug or the like attached to the pivoted side to prevent it beifnglknocked or jerked back by the falling As shown in the drawings the side N is formed with one or more short arms P which move therewith on the hinge O and the carriage carries an arm or arms P adapted, just after the side N drops, to engage per opening, of a carriage shiftable over the sa1d opening and provided with a chute having a movable end which is automatically elevated and depressed relatively to the furnace opening as the carriage is moved in opposite directions, and a hopper under which the carriage and chute have movement.

In a closing device for furnaces and the like, thecombination with a furnace having a top opening, of a carriage shiftable over sa1d opening in opposite directions and 113V? ing a door movably supported thereby and operating to open and close the said furnace opening, the carriage also being provided with a chute to aline with the furnace opening, and a hopper fixed above the furnace opening, the carriage and chute means being movable between the bottom of the hopper and the opening and the chute means of the carriage operating to continue the hopperdownwardly to the furnace opening.
3. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having a top opening, of a carriage shiftable in opposite directions over the top of the furnace and'having a door suspended therefrom and automatically elevated and depressed by the shifting movement of the carriage to open and close the said furnace opening, and a hopper disposed above the top opening of the furnace, the carriage being movable between the hopper and the top opening of the'furnace.
In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an opening, of a carriage shiftable in opposite directions over the opening of the furnace and carrying a door which is automatically elevated and depressed by the shifting movement of the carriage in opposite directions to open and close the furnace opening, the carriage also being provided with a chute to aline with the furnace opening, and a hopper disposed in fixed position above the furnace opening, the carriage and chute being movable between the hopper and the furnace opening.
5. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an opening, of a carriage shiftable in opposite directions over the opening of the furnace and having a door to open and close the said furnace opening in accordance with the movement of the carriage, the carriage also provided with a chute having a movable end which is automatically ele- 1 provided with upper vated and depressed relatively to the furnace opening as the carriage is moved in opposite directions, and a hop-per arranged in cooperative relation to the furnace opening, the carriage, chute and door being movable between the hopper and the furnace opening.
6. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an opening and a supply means at a distance above and cooperating with said opening, of upper and lower doors mounted between the supply means and the furnace opening and having a traveling moi emcnt in reverse directions to respectively shut oil and liberate the contents of the supply means and to close and clear the opening of the furnace, the lower door having a rising and falling movement.
7. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an inlet opening and a fuel supply means disposed in cooperative relation to said opcning, of a carriage movable between the said inlet opening and the fuel supply means and carrying means for opening and closing the fuel supply means and furnace opening, and a chute carried by and movable with the carriage, said chute being provided with a hinged end which is closed by the movement of the carriage to assist in directing the fuel into the furnace opening from the supply means.
8. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an inlet opening and a fuel supply disposed at a distance above the opening, of a carriage shiftable between the fuel supply and furnace opening and having upper and lower doors respectively operating to open and close the fuel supply and inlet opening of the furnace, the lower door having a rising and falling movement, and a chute movable with the carriage between the inlet opening of the furnace and the fuel suppl and beneath the latter to direct the fuel into the furnace.
9. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an inlet opening and a fuel supply disposed at a distance from the said opening, of a traveling carriage having a chute movable therewith between the fuel supply and inlet opening of the furnace, the chute having one end movably supported and closed by the movement of the carriage, and means cooperating with the said movable chute end for holdlng the same down in fixed position when closed.
10. In a closing device for furnaces and the like, the combination with a furnace having an inlet opening and a fixed fuel supply disposed in cooperative relation to said opening, of a carriage movable between the sa1d fuel supply and inlet opening and and lower doors to respeetively open and close the fuel supply and inlet opening, and a chute having one side in the form of a movable door and the remaining sides fixed in relation to each riage cooper my hand in presence 0 ating with the fuel supply and 10 rnace inlet are shifted to open position.
