To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALLEN HITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gustine, in the county of Comanche and State of Texas, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Combined Buggy-Tops and Rein and Robe Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined cushioned buffer for buggy tops and a rein and lap robe holder, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, convenient and inexpensive device adapted to subserve these several functions.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a buggy body and top showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device detached.

The device is preferably formed of spring wire and comprises a body or bracing member 1 in the general shape of an oblong rectangular loop, the front and rear portions 2 and 3 of which are variably longitudinally lowered or curved. The forward end of the front portion 2 of the member 1 is bent to form eyes 4 to engage the screw 5 by which the main how 6 of the buggy top 7 is pivotally connected with the buggy body, while the rear end of the rear portion 3 of the member 1 is bent to provide a partially circular spring loop forming jaws 8 to grip the rear bow'9, whereby the device is secured in place and the top braced when in upright position. Spring coils 10 are provided in the arms of the member 1 at the juncture of the portions 2 and 3 to exert the desired spring pressure and permit the brace to bend when the top is folded to rest upon the lower pivot stud 11 of the broken or collapsed jointed locking brace 12. This construction adapts the device to be applied to any ordinary construction of buggy top, one of the holders being applied at each side, as will be readily understood. The portion 3 is considerably bowed to project some distance beyond the bow 9, as shown.

A supplemental holder 13 extends transversely of the portion 2 of the brace 1 below the coils 10 and above the eyes 1 and is composed of a U-shaped wire having its arms bent to form eyes 14 which embrace the

15 and 16 of the portion 2 and may be soldered thereto, if desired. This wire provides forwardly and rearwardly projecting spaced pairs of clamping arms 17 and 18. A third wire 19 is formed with eyes 20 engaging the

15 and 16 and has its ends extending in opposite directions, forming clamping

arms

21 and 22 arranged between the arms of the respective sets 17 and 18 and adapted to cooperate therewith. The arm 21 is adapted to clamp the adjacent side edge of a lap robe 23 against the arm 17, while the arm 22 is adapted to clamp one or both of the reins 2 1- against the arms 18. It will be observed that the bowed portion 3 is arranged to contact with and rest upon the stud 11 upon which the bow 9 customarily rests when the top is folded. Such portions 3 of the two devices will accordingly act as spring buffers to absorb all shocks and jars when the top is thrown back and thereby prevent injury to the top.

It will thus be seen that the device may be employed for several useful purposes, may be readily applied to and removed from any ordinary buggy top, and is simple of construction and may be manufactured and sold at a compartively low cost.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a main member having attaching means at its opposite ends, a primary clamping member formed of a single piece of wire bent about said main member and extending beyond opposite sides thereof to provide oppositely arranged spaced pairs of clamping arms, and a secondary member formed of a single piece of wire secured to said main member and extending beyond opposite sides thereof to provide clamping arms disposed between the spaced clamping arms of the primary clamping member.
