RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 7, 1910.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. GAs'rnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Randolph, in the county of Union and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rules; and l do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in measuring rules and my object is to provide .means whereby objects having' flat or round surfaces may be measured, and, a further object is to provide means for holding parts of the measuring device in its adjusted position.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure l is a plan view of the rule showing the portion thereof employed for measuring round objects extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side of the rule showing the part employed for measuring round objects in its closed position, and, Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 3 3 Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, l and 2 indicate the body sections of the rule, the faces of which are provided with the usual or any preferred form of graduations 3, while the sections are hingedly secured together at one end by the usual or any preferred fo 1m of hinge et so that the rule may be folded in a compact form or extended for measuring purposes.
Formed in one face of the section l is a dove tail groove 5, which groove extends substantially the full length of the section l and is adapted to receive a bar 6, the edges of which bar are tapered to lit the walls of the groove 5 and as the walls of the groove overhang the edges of the bar 6, said bar will be held against twisting movement, but will be permitted to move lengthwise. The outer end of the bar 6 is provided with a head 7, whereby a circular object may be readily measured by disposing the inner edge of the head against one face of the circular object and the ends of the sections l and 2 against the opposite side of the circlilar body and by providing suitable graduations S on the bar 6, the diameter of the circular object may be readily ascertained.
Extending across the groove 5 adjacent its outer end and secured to the face of the section l is a strap 9 through the center of which is introduced a binding' screw l0, the inner end portion of the binding screw and the opening through the strap 9 being threaded so that when said screw is rotated, the inner' end thereof will be moved into or out of engagement with the bar 6. The end of the binding` screw necessarily projects a distance over the face of the section l and to prevent said screw from catching upon the edge of a pocket or being broken, a shield ll is extended over the outer end of the screw and fastened to the strap l, thus protecting the screw against breakage and guarding against the same catching on the edge of pockets.
When measuring a circular object to ascertain the diameter thereof, the head 7 is extended a suiicient distance to admit the object to be measured between the head and end of the rule, when the head and rule are forced into engagement with the object. The diameter of the object can be read from the graduations on the bar 6 and if it is desired to retain the head in its adjusted position any length of time, the binding screw l0 is turned downwardly on to the bar 6 so that the rule can be laid away without danger of movement of the bar in the rule section. lVhen, however, the rule is not in use, the head is moved inwardly until it engages the ends of the sections l and 2, when by turning the binding screw downwardly, the head will be held in its inward position until such time as it is again to be used.
