GAGE FOR TWIST-DRILLS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18,1917.
Application filed February 26, 1917. Serial No. 151,064.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. CLEAvEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prince Bay, S. I., in the county of Richmond, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages for Twist-Drills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in gages and has particular reference to a gage employed when sharpening twist drills.
An object of the invention is the provision of a simple and improved gage for eectively centering a drill therein so as to test the point thereof to ascertain if the same has been perfectly beveled.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which for the purpose of illustrating the present invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l is a front elevation of. the gage showing a drill mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3l of Fig. 2. v
The drawing illustrates what is now believed to be a preferred form of the invention which is made of any suitable material and comprises a body 5 consisting of two wings or sides 7 extending at right angles to each other to provide a substantially V- shaped longitudinal trough 6. The sides 7 are provided intermediate their ends with oppositely disposed linger openings 8 which facilitate the placing and removal of the drill 9 in the gage.
One end of the body is provided with an abutment 10 integral therewith, the width of which is equal Vto or greater than the depth of the trough 6. The abutment consists of two portions A, each springing from one of the sides 7 and meeting at an angle, so that their under faces 11 Vslant upwardly and toward each other as shown, so that when the point of the drill 9 is engaged with said surfaces adjacent the intersection thereof, it will be readily apparent whether or not said pointis properly beveled. The meeting line of the faces 1l lies beyond the adjacent end of the body 5 and there is thus formed a sight opening 12 through which the point of the drill may be observed from both sides of the gage. It is to be noted from the drawing that the line of intersection of the sides of the trough G is perpendicular to the line of intersection of the surfaces 11 so that when the drill is placed in the bottom of the trough the point thereof will engage the line of intersection of said surfaces.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the invention provides a gage of simple construction and one which will facilitate the testing of a drill point.
What is claimed is z- A drill bit gage consisting of a body including two side portions extending at an angle to each other to form a substantially V-shaped trough, and an abutment at one end of the trough consisting of two portions formed integral with each other `and with the body, one of said portions springing from an end of each of the sides of the body, said portions lying at an angle to each other to expose downwardly and outwardly slanted faces directed toward the trough and extending thereacross, the meeting line of the said faces lying outwardly beyond the end of the trough to provide a sight opening between the abutment and the end of the body, said sides having their free edge portions cut away between their ends to provide finger openings.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED H. CLEAVES.
