Description

W K. ARNOLD. WATER GAGE. APPLICATION TILED DEO.14,1909.
Patentd July 26, 1910.
. s E N w w THE NORRIS PETERS co., WASHINGTON, nxc,
WILLIAM KYLE ARNOLD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WATER-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26, 1910.
Application filed December 14, 1909. Serial No. 533,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KYLE An- NOLD, a citizen of the United States, resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVater-Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to an improvement in a driptwater-gage for testing the-height of water in boilers.
The object of my invention is to produce a water-gage the construction of which will preclude the lodgment of scale or other extraneous matter between the parts and the consequent interference and impairing of the same thereby.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section, showing my invention connected to a broken section of a boiler. Fig. 2 is a plan View on line II-II I f Fig. 1 showing an opening in the head of the gage out of alinement with a discharge outlet of the gage.
The reference numerals in the following specification refer to like parts in the drawings, in which, referring to Fig. 1, a nipple 10 is connected at the end 10 thereof to the boiler 11, and to the other end of said nipple is secured a T -joint 12. To the lower threaded end 12 of the T-joint a plug 13 is threadedly connected, which is provided with an opening 14. A suitable head 15, having an opening 15 therein, is adapted to seat upon the inner face of the plug and is suitably secured to one end 16 of the stem 16 around which and carried upon the upper end 15 of the head 15 a coil spring 17 is arranged, the latter having a loose washer 18 on its upper extremity. A bonnet 19 is threadedly connected to the upper end 12 of the T-j oint, the end 19 of the bonnet acting upon the washer 18 to compress the spring 17 against the head 15 and impart a flexible bearing to the latter against the plug 13. A stuffing-box 20' is threadedly secured to the outer end of the bonnet and a small hand wheel 21 is suitably attached to the top of the stem.
With the parts constructed and arranged as shown, and the openings 14, 15 out of alinement, as shown in Fig. 11, the operation of my invention is as follows: By means of the hand wheel 21 the stem 16 is operated to revolve the head 15 until the opening 15 registers with the openings 14 in the plug when, if the height of water in the boiler 11 is above the lower inner level of the nipple, the fact will be indicated by its passing through the apertures 14, 15, no show of water while the openings are in alinement indicating that the water in the boiler is below the nipple, when the head may again be revolved to change the position of the opening 15 relative to the opening 14.
It will be apparent that in operating the head 15, its position relative to the plug is not changed and that a perfect closure of those parts may therefore be maintained to exclude the water from between the parts and to prevent scale, grit or other matter from being lodged between the parts and impairing the parts and the closure. And further, that the radial position of the opening 15' on the head 15 permitting it to be revolved by the stem out of alinement with the opening 14 peculiarly breaks the lines of communication between the water and the opening so as to effectively prevent a gradual leakage of the water through the joints.
It will be understood that more than one gage may be used on a boiler, if desired, for the purpose of testing different intervening heights of the water in the boiler. And it will be apparent that a sliding member Without a communicating opening may be used in connection with the part 14, if desired, instead of the part 15, and that various changes in the construction and operation of the parts may be made without de parting from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A water gage, comprising a nipple, a T-shaped member connected to said nipple, a detachable valve seat having a discharge outlet and carried on one arm of the T- shaped member, a valve stem operatively 100 projecting from the opposite arm of the T- shaped member, a valve havlng a perforation therein carried by the valve stem and fitted against the said valve seat.
2. A water gage, comprising a nipple, a 105 stem in the opposite arm of the T-shaped 110 member, a valve having a perforation there- In testimony whereof, I the said WILLIAM in gecflilreii1 t0 the innelll' end 1of the valve stem K. ARNOLD have hereunto set my hand.
an tte against t e Va ve seat, a loose Washer carried upon the valve stem at the WILLIAM KYLE ARNOLD 5 base of the bonnet, a spring on the said stem Witnesses:
between the Valve and the Washer, and means J OE M. CLARK,
for operating the valve stem. CHAS. RAWSON.
