NATHAN FUCHS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HARRY D. KIRK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STETI-IOSCOPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATI-MN FUCHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Stethoscopes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stethoscopes and has for its object the production of a stethoscope of improved construction and operation.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a stethoscope embodying my invention but showing the ear tubes as partially broken away, Fig. 2, an elevation of the stethoscope partially in section, Fig. 3, an elevation at right angles to Fig. 2 with the ear tubes broken away, and Fig. 4L, a longitudinal section of Fig. 2.
In the preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, a central valve casing l is provided with oppositely disposed diaphragm chambers 2 and 3 screwthreaded thereto. Each of said chambers is closed on its outer side by liexible diaphragms I and 5 respectively which are secured in position by means of threaded caps 6 and 7 respectively, as shown in Fig. 4. Passages 8 and 9 place each of said diaphragme in open communication with the interior of valve casing l. At one side valve casing l is provided with the supplemental chamber 10 also in communication with the interior of said casing. Nipples l1 are threaded into the walls of chambers l0 and serve as a means for securing the ends of ear tubes l2 which carry ear pieces 13 at their outer ends. Within casing l is mounted a rotary valve plug 14 which is provided with passages or ports 15 by means of which either of the chambers 2 and 3 may be thrown into communication with chamber l0. Plug lt is preferably secured in said housing by means of a thumb screw 1G threaded into the end of said plug which is depending in form as shown. at its other end plug la is provided with a linurled head 17 which is preferably provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable letters or other markings to indicate which of the stethoscopic chambers is in communication with supplemental chamber l0.
In use it will be seen that either of the stethoscopic chambers 2 or 3 may be thrown into communication with chamber 10 and thus with the ears of the operator through ear tubes 12. Thus the operator is enabled to readily examine different portions of the anatomy with either chamber as desired.
IVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a stethoscope, the combination of larger and smaller diaphragm chambers, a valve chamber in permanent communication with each of said diaphragm chambers; a supplemental chamber in open communication with the valve chamber; ear tubes communicating with said supplemental chamber; and a valve in said valve chamber adapted to throw one of said diaphragm chambers into communication with said supplemental chamber and cut ofil communication with the other diaphragm chamber, substantially as described.
2. In a stethoscope, the combination of a valve casing; oppositely disposed larger and smaller diaphragm chambers communieating with said valve casing; a supplemental chamber on saidr casing and communicating with said valve casing; ear tubes permanently communicating with said supplemental chamber; and a rotary valve in said casing adapted to throw one of said diaphragm chambers into communication with said supplemental chamber and cut off communication with the other diaphragm chamber, substantially as described.
3. In a stethoscope, the combination of a valve casing containing a valve chamber; oppositely disposed larger and smaller diaplnagm chambers communicating with said valve chamber by oppositely disposed channels in axial alinement with each other; a
supplemental Chamber on said casing separate from said valve chamber but communicating therewith through a channel at right angles to said rst mentioned channels; ear tubes communicating with said supplemental chamber; and a rotary valve in said valve chamber having passages at right angles to each other and adapted to throw either of said diaphragm Chambers into communication with said supplemental chamber and to cut oft Communication between the other diaphragm chamber and said supplemental chamber, substantially as described.
4. In a stethoscope, the combination of a valve easing; oppositely disposed larger and smaller diaphragm chambers communicating with said valve Casing by oppositely disposed ohannels in aXial alinement with each other; a supplemental chamber on said cas- NATHAN FUCHS. itnesses HELEN F.
