To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NIELS TI-IORVALDSEN BRIX, engine-driver, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Aalborg, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to watergages especially applicable to boilers and the like and has for its object to provide a gage which may be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the water-gage cocks of a boiler, which object, among others, is accomplished by the arrangement, construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application.
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view on the line 11 of Fig. 3, the nuts 9 and top plug being shown in side elevation; Fig. 2, a similar view from front to rear through the middle of the crossheads and rib or web, the cover and glass plates being removed; Fig. 3, a view in front elevation of the gage as assembled, the top and bottom plugs being omitted; Fig. 4, a horizontal cross-sectional view on the line 4L-1 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5, a detail view of the tubular support or sleeve, with an integral nut or squared outer end and having its inner screw-threaded end turned into the outer end of one of the boiler connections, the valve or stop-cock of the latter being omitted as unnecessary to an understanding of the invention.
Referring nowin detail to the drawings, 1 designates a pair of cross-heads or hubs provided with a horizontal bore 13, a vertical bore 10 extending outward from bore 13 and a vertical bore 11, of smaller diameter than bore 10, extending inward from the bore 13 to and communicating with the slot 3. A rib or web 2 integral with said cross-heads connects the same and is provided with a slot 3 of equal width throughout and extending nearly the length of said rib. The bores 11 as above stated form communication between the respective bores 13 and the slot 3. Said rib 2 has perfectly smooth faces and is of the same thickness throughout. Glass plates 4: are fitted on each side respectively of said rib or web 2 and secured in position by means of the two U-shaped sections 5 forming the casing and held firmly in place by means of rivets 12 passing from front to rear through said sections, thus holding the above parts snugly in place and making a perfectly water-tight gage. The sections 5 have vertical central sight openings 6 so situated that the slot 3 and the height of the water therein may be observed at a glance. Two boiler connections 7 are secured to the boiler at a distance from each other corresponding to the distance between the bores 13 in the cross-heads 1. Each of these connections 7 has a small bore 17 leading into the interior of the boiler and a valveor stop-cock, not shown, which is conveniently located in a transverse bore 18, and which may be any convenient size or type. They are further provided with small internally screw-threaded recesses 19, slightly larger in diameter than the water passages, but forming a continuation thereof and being in the outer ends of said boiler connections. Sleeves 8, having nut shaped integral ends 9 and having screw-threads formed, on their other ends are passed through bores 13 of said crossheads and screwed tightly into the internally screw-threaded recesses 19 above mentioned, the nut-shaped ends are presented outward, and the interior of said sleeves and said water passages in said boiler connections communicate and form continuous passages of the same diameter throughout. These sleeves 8 are provided with internally screw-threaded bores in their outer ends, which bores make communication with the interiors or bores of said sleeves. Plugs 14, adapted to be screwed into said bores in the outer ends of said sleeves 8 make possible the speedy and easy removal of sediment mud &c. from the interiors of said sleeves. Said sleeves 8 are further provided with openings or perforations 15 which register respectively with the ends of bores 11 when the gage is assembled, thus forming communication between slot 3 and the interior of sleeves 8. When the valves or stop-cocks are turned to the correct position communication will be established between the slot 3 and the interior of the apparatus to which the gage is attached, through the above described water passages, sleeves, perforations thereof and bores 11. When the valves or stop-cocks of the cooks 7 are turned to close communication between the interior of the apparatus to which the gage is attached and the slot 3, the plugs 14; may be removed from the ends of sleeves 8 and the gage cleaned of all sediment, &c., in any suitable manner.
In Fig. 1 transverse bores 18 are illustrated for the reception of any suitable form of valve or stop-cock. The valves or stopcocks themselves have not been illustrated, as they form no part of the invention and any usual and suitable form of valve or stopcock may be employed. 0 The bores 10 are made while boring the bores or passages 11 and have no function in the operation of the gage, but if left open would allow of leakage from the gage through the perforations in the sleeves 8. Accordingly these bores 10 are closed by means of plugs 16, the bore 10 in the top cross-head being shown as so plugged and that in the bottom cross-head being left unplugged, for purposes of clearness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A water gage comprising two horizontally perforated heads connected by an integral rib having a slot, said heads having vertical passages forming communication between said slot and the horizontal perforations above referred to, in combination with boiler connections, sleeves passing through said heads and adapted to secure the heads in position upon said boiler connections, said sleeves being provided with perforations registering with said vertical passages and adapted to have communication with the interior of the boiler.
2. A water gage comprising two perforated heads connected by a rib having a slot, said heads being provided with passages forming communication between said slot and the perforations above referred to, glasses fitted 011 each side of said rib and a casing secured firmly around said glasses and rib, in combination with boiler connections, sleeves passing through said perforations and securing the said heads in position upon said boiler connections and having communication with the interior of the apparatus to which it is applied, said sleeves being provided with perforations registering with the ends of said passages.
3. A water gage comprising two perforated heads connected by an integral rib having a slot thercthrough, said heads having passages forming communication between said slot and the perforations above referred to, in combination with boiler connections, sleeves passing through said heads and holding the said heads in position upon said boiler connections, said sleeves being provided with perforations registering with said passages and removable plugs fitting into the outer ends of said sleeves, and having communication with the interior of the apparatus to which the gage is applied.
