Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Application led April 5, 1910. Serial No. 553,490.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BoLEsLAv DLoUii', a Subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Smokeless Muffler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved muffler, arranged to deaden the noise of the exhaust gases and to deprive the same of smoke.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a casing having a zigzag passage forthe exhaust gases from the engine, and liquid jets for the gases, to condense the saine and deprive the gases of smoke.
A practical embodiment of the, inventio is represented in the accompanying draw.- ings forming a part of this specification, in
. which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a cross section of the improved smokeless muiiler as a plied, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section oi) the muliler.
The casin A, is preferably made cylindrical, and is connected near one end with the exhaust pipe B- of an internal combustion engine, and within the casing A are arranged transverse baliie plates C, provided with apertures D, D located alternately at the-bottom and top of successive plates C,
to provide a zigzag passage through the casing A, for the exhaust gases to travel through from the inlet at the pipe B to the outlet E at the other end of the casing A. By the use of the baiileplat-es C, the noise of the exhaust gases is gradually deadened and the baile plates .C form Within the casing A se arate compartments, each of which is provi ed at the top with a spraying nozzle F, connected by a branch pipe G with a water supply pipe G, connected with a pump H, having its suction pipe I extending into "a reservoir J, connected by a pipe K with the bottom of the muliler casing A. The pump H may be thelpump usually employed for circulating water through the cylinder jacket to keep the engine cylinder cooled.
When the engine is in use and the pump H is running, then ,the exhaust gases from the engine are passed through thepzigzag passage in the casin A, and water is pumped by the pump into the nozzles. F
by Way of the pipe G. The water passing into the nozzles F is sprayed by the latter ento the exhaust gases passingl through the casing A, so that the gases are deprived of the smoke, and the Water flows along the ,bottom of the casing. into the pipe K, to return to the reservoir J, from which the Water is drawn bythe pump H. Any oil,.
zag passage in the casing A, and the smoke and vapors are condensed by the sprays of water, so that the gases finally escaping atv the outlet E are practicall noiseless and free of obnoxious smoke 'an smell.
The muffler described is exceedingly serviceable for use on automobiles, motor boats and other vehicles using gasolene, or other internal combustion engines.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A smokeless muffler, comprising a casin having an inlet and an outlet for the ex aust gases, battle plates in the casin to provide a zigzag passage for the gases w ile passing from the inlet to the outlet, and nozzles located between adjacent baiiic plates and connected with a liquid supply for spraying a liquid onto the gases during their passage through the casing.
2. A smokeless muffler comprising 'acasing having an inlet and an outlet for the exhaust gases from an engine, battle plates in 'the said casing to provide a zigzag passage for the exhaust gases, nozzles in the top of the' casing intermediate adjacent baffle plates, a pump connected with the said nozzles, and a reservoir connected with the said casing te 'receive tlie water from the latter, the suction pipeof the said pump extending into the reservoir..
3. A smokeless muliier, comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet for the ex-` haust gases from an engine, ba-file plates in the said casing to provide a zigzag passage for the exhaust gases, nozzles in the to of the casing intermediate ad'aoent ba ie plates, 'a pump connected with t e said nozzles, a reservoir connected with the said casing to receive the yWater from the latter, the suction pipe ofthe said pump extending int-o the reservoir, and drainin means on the reservoir for draining ooi and other extraneous matter.
1. A smokeless muiileil, comprising a casing, an inlet pipe for exhaust gases connected with one en d of said' casing, and an outlet at'the other end, a series-of transveise bafiie plates Within the casing and forming with the casing separate compartments, each baffle platebeing provided with apertures located alternately at the bottom and top of successive glates, a spraying nozz'le at the top ofeac compartment, and a vs fater supply pipe connected with said nozz es.
5. A smokeless mur, comprising a easing through which the exhaust gases pass, spraying evices .in the casing, a'reservoir connected with the oasin to receive the Waterjfrom the latter, am? means for forcing the water from the reservoir to said spraying devices.
6. A smokeless ing having an inlet an mller .comprising a casd an outlet for the eeaoeo4 exhaust gases, means for roviding a zig-` f zag passage for the :gases w iile passing from the inlet to the outlet,.means for 'spraying a liquid onto the gases during ,the passage through the casing, a reservoir connected with the casing to receive the water from the latter, and a pump connected withl the' reservoir. 7 A smokeless rnuler, comprising a casin having an inlet and an outlet for the eX aust ases, baiiie plates in the said casing,
withthe nozzles, and a'pump with which.
said water supp pipe is connected, the suction pipe of Sal pump extending into said In testimony whereof-I' have signed m" name .to this specieation inv the presenc:
