Description

Para
JOHN W. DEARDORIEF,
OF OAKLAND, OREGON.
' SQUARE.
` Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July I9, 1910.
Application filed November 17, 1909. seriai No. 528,510.k j
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. DEARDORFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bevels primarily adapted for use in connection with roof building and the object of the improvement is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, comprising a handle member and a pair of oppositely disposed blades, one of the blades being pivotally attached to the handle member and the opposite blade being pivotally attached to the first blade, the second blade having a pair of curved openings adapted for the reception of a removable pintle. carried by the handle and whereby the said second blade may be automatically swung to provide an angle for the back cut i of a jack rafter, after the first blade has been fit against the hip rafter or whereby the relative position of the pivot playing within the arcuate slots of the second blade may be readily adjusted to provide for the different required angular relations of the blades.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction of bevels hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device constructed in accordance with the present invention showing the blades swung and indicating by the dottedv lines the different angles which the blades may be caused to assume in relation with each other. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device, parts being illustrated in sections. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of one of the blades.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 is what may be termed the handle for the device. This handle 1 is preferably of a rectangular cross sectional formation and has each of its sides in parallel relation with each other. The handle 1 is provided with suitable metallic reinforcements upon its lower edge and adjacent its top. The said handle 1 is also centrally provided with a longitudinally extending opening 2 terminating `a suitable distance away from its bottom edge and the said opening is adapted for the reception of a pair of blades, designated by the numerals 3 and et. The blade 3 is pivotally connected between the arms provided by the opening 2 adjacent the top of the handle 1 through the medium of a removable threaded member 5 while the blade l is pivoted to the blade 3, below its pivotal connection with the handle 1, as indicated by the numeral 6. This blade 4L` is provided, belowl its pivotal connection with the blade 3, with a plurality of arcuate `openings or cutaway portions 7 and the handle 1 is provided with a transversely arranged opening Vadapted for the reception of a removable pintle 8 which is adapted to engage between the walls of either of the openings 7. By this arrangement it will be noted that as the blade 3 is swung upon its pivot 5 the blade 4L will be caused to swing upon its pivot 6 in an opposite direction, and through the medium of the pintle 8 engaging the arcuate walls of the slot 7 will automatically assume a desired angle in relation to the sides of the handle 1 and in relation to the swung blade 3. It will be further noted that by positioning the removable pintle 8 in the desired arcuate cutaway portion 7 the said blade 1 is caused to assume different angles in relation to the handle 1 and to the blade 3, thus providing for the several cuts required in the con struction of rafters and also providing for the compound miters for hoppers, seats and the like.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that I have provided an eX- tremely simple and `effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a device for the purpose described, a handle member, a blade pivotally' secured to the handle member, a seccHd/blade pivotally connected with the r/st blade, the second blade being provided with a plurality ay portions, and a removable pintle f rried by the handle adapted to engage Within any of the said cut-away p0rtions. n Y
2.,In a device forthe purpose intended, a handle, said handle being provided With a central longitudinally extending slot terminating a distance away from Vits bottom edge, a pair of blades Within the cut-away portion, one of said blades bein pivoted to the handle adjacent its upper edge, the second blade being pivotedvvth the rst blade adjacent its pivotal connection With the Vhandleiule "Second blade' having its face provided with a plurality of arcuate slots,
and a removable pintle carried by the handle and adapted to engage any of the said slots. -In testimony ,whereof I a'fix my signa! ture in presence of two Witnesses. Y
