To all whom it may 'Be it 'known that I, JOSEPH LEHMANN, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in the Preparation of Colorless Inc, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for the preparation. of colorless glue, in which the material to be treated is fed to the interior of a rotatable drum com.- posed of perforated material, said drum running in a casing containing hotwater whereby the gelatin is separated from the insoluble matter, and in which a screw is provided in said drum for conveying the insoluble matter to the delivery end of the drum, the objectbeing to obtain a colorless glue from the clippings'and waste of hide and other glue making materials.
Under my invention I provide at the de livery end of the rotatable drum' two or more curved blades mounted on the shaft of the screw, said curved blades taking up the insoluble matter and delivering it to a conical outlet pipe. The gelatinous solution is drawn 0d and clarified and is then passed over a rotary drying cylinder from which the thin layer of gelatin is removed and disintegrated, and the disintegrated or powdered gelatin is subjected to a current of air to hasten the cooling of the product.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I. have hereunto appended explanatory drawings, whereon:-

The apparatus is composed of a casin or cylinder T in which is water A heate by steam from a pipe 2;. In the interior of this casin and longitudinally thereof a cylindrica or polyhedrica-l rotary receiver or drum V is arranged in which is fixed an Archimedean screw S connected with the drum V so as to rotate therewith, the screw shaft passing through the drum and casing. The drum is constructed of wire cloth or gauze upon an iron framin the wire cloth or gauze being sufficiently ne to retain the insoluble matters in the interior of the comartments A and B of the'drum V, but alowing the gelatinous solution to pass through, and the level of the water in the casing T being such that the lower part of the rotatable drum V runs in the water as shown at Fig. 1. .At the front or loading .order to be freed from end of this receiver or drumV there is a s eci en-ane mm. hopper G into which the raw materials are I put, and from which they run down by their own weight into the hot water. As the drum rotates the screw, which rotates with it carries the insoluble matters from the one end of the drum to the other, while the gelatin is dissolved in the liquid A and is left in a state of solution. At the other extremity B of the cylinder, the insoluble matters are raised 'by the curved blades or elevators 0, 0 mounted on the screw shaft, see Fig.
2, and are discharged by the conical outlet pipe D (Fig. 1.) arranged on the casing around the screw shaft.
Before the glue making materials are introduced into the apparatus they are completed subdivided, washed and reduced to pulp by means of a crushing cylinder, similar to those at present used in paper making. When. thus disintegrated and reduced to the condition of soup the insoluble materials lose their consistency and on being subjected to the action of boiling water they immediately give up the gelatin which is rendered freehence its colorless character.
After extraction, the gelatinous solution may beclarified by means of the filter. F and drawn out by the rotary pump P in grease in the reservoir R.
While the solution is still hot, no matter to what degree it may. have been concentrated, it may be desiccated immediately. To efiect this it is run by means of the cock r into the hopper m. An opening or interval of about one quarter of amillimeter for example is left between the surface of the rotary drying cylinder J, which is heated by steam and the lower extremity of the hopper side or wall m. This interval allows the liquid to spread over the smooth surface of the rotary drying cylinder in a thin, uniform, and continuous layer. Exposed in that way, the liquid forms a thin sheet or skin of solid matter, and is dried completely. At that point the blade 0 which is arranged along the cylinder, detaches the skin or sheet while it is still hot and rather sticky, and the sheet is caused to fall between the longitudinal wings t of wire cloth which are fixed to the rotary disintegrating cylinder L. The sheet is disintegrated at the same time and the material is scattered in difierent directions [as the result of the rotary movement of the disintegrating cylinder.

The coolin is rapid owing to the slggillrt thickness of t e material, and it is still ther hastened by the natural draft of air arranged between the cage 11 and the funnel or chimney j, the current of air traversing the wings of openwork and thus cooling the gelatin powder durin v motion.
The two cylinders 5, L, turn at the same speed; say from 4 to 6 revolutions per minute. This speed may be varied by means of friction gear I as required, and according to the degree of concentration of the gelatin solution to be dried.
The extracting apparatus, and the mechanical drier as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, work very well at boiling tem erature, say
100 C., but the temperature s ould not be allowed to exceed 106 centigrade.
Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination, in a glue manufacturingapparatus, of a; casing for the reception of liquid, means for heatin the liquid, a rotatable drum composed of material locatedin said casing, means for feeding the material to be operated on into said drum, a screw in said drum consisting of a shaft and rotary'curved blades mounted on the shaft for the purpose of dischar ing theinsoluble materials afterpassing a ong the drum.

The combination, in a glue manufacturing apparatus, of a casing for the reception of hquid, means for heatin the liquid, a rotatable drum composed o perforated material located in said casing, means for feeding the material to be operated on into said drum, a screw in said drum consisting of a shaft and rotary curved blades mounted on the shaft for the purpose of discharging the insoluble materials from the drum, a conical outlet pipe in said casing, means for clarifying the extracted gelatinous solution comprising a filter, a rotary pump and a grease reservoir, means for desiccating the clarified solution comprising a hopper under said grease chamber and a rotary heated drying cylinder mounted beneath said hopper, a blade in contact with the cylinder and awinged rotary disintegrating cylinder mounted beneath said blade, and means for hastening the cooling of the finished product.
