My invention relates to an improvement in repeating take-down gunsof that class having a longitudinally movable breechblock which is raised and lowered at its rear end for being locked and unlocked, and operated by its connection with the rear end of an action-bar the forward end of which is secured to a sliding handle located in front of the gun-frame or receiver and moving back and forth under the gun-barrel, the ob ect of my present invention being to provide a simple and reliable mechanism for holding the breech block in the gun-frame when the gun is taken down, and for unlocking the breech-block when the gun is put together.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a repeating take-down gun having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ a locking-lever 2 located in a deep horizontal recess 3 formed in the left hand side wall of a longitudinally and vertically movable breech-block 4 which is formed at its rear upper corner with a locking-nose 5 entering a locking-notch 6 formed in the inner face of the solid to 7 of the gun-frame or receiver 8 to the fdrward end of which the gun-barrel 9 is removably connected on any approved takedown principle. As shown, the barrel 9 is connected to a take-down band 10 the lower portion of which has an opening (not shown) for the rearward passage through it of the tubular magazine 11 the forward end of which is supported by the barrel. The said locking-lever 2 is pivoted upon a vertical pin 12 passing through an eye 13- formed near the forward end of the lever the extreme forward end of which is shaped to form a stop-finger 14. To adapt the level; 2 to discharge its locking function, it is formed with a locking-rib 15 projecting outwardly from its outer face and adapted to enter a horizontal cut 16 formed in the inner face of the left hand wall of the gun-frame or receiver 8, the lever being swung outwardly upon its pivot 12 by means of a helical spring 17 located in a socket 18 leading out of the bottom wall of the rear end of the recess 3 in the breech-block 4, the said spring 17 exerting a constant effort to swing the outer end ofthe lever outward.
To retire the lever 2 so as to release the breech-block, I provide it with an outwardly projecting operating-cam or bevel 19 located upon the lower edge of its rear end in position to be engaged by the rear end of the horizontal action-bar 20 which moves back and forth in a shallow groove 21 located below the cut 16 aforesaid and formed in the inner face of the left hand wall of the gun-frame or receiver 8, the said actionbar being secured at its forward end to an operating-handle 22 .mounted for sliding movement back and forth u on the magazine 11 in the usual manner. Kn operating-lug 23 projecting inward from the action-bar 20 enters a cam-path 24 formed in the. left hand side wall of the breech-block 4, the said cam path being adapted in form to cause the action-bar to move the block 4 back and forth and also to raise and lower the block intoits looked and unlocked positions when it is at the limit of its forward movement.
lever 2 will be maintained in its retired position in which it is idle, by the engagement of the high point of its cam 19 by the flat inner face of the action-bar '20. When the gun is taken down, the action-bar 20 is removed with the gun-barrel 9, magazine 11 and band 10, from the n-frame 8 and the parts organized therewlth. As the said bar 20 is drawn forward out of its groove 21, it is disengaged from the lever 2 which is at once swung outward so as to enter its locking-rib 15 into the cut 16 in the inframe 8, by its spiral spring 17 which will maintain it in its locked position as long as the n is taken down at which time the block 4 will be held in its elevated and locked position in the said gun-frame. When, however, the gun is put together, the extreme rear end of the action-bar 20 will ride over the cam 19 of the locking-lever 2 and swing the same inward against the ten-- sion of its spring 17, whereby the lockingrib 15 of the lever 2 will be entirely cleared from the cut 16 and the block permitted to be raised and lowered again by the actionbar as though the said lever were not present in the gun.
