Referring to the drawings: We have found in shaking grates that it is of an advantage to provide a construction wherein there are no dead points in the fire and in which free passage of air is permitted and caused in order that a suitable draft is provided, and we have further found that it is of an advantage to be able to remove the lifting fire bars without disturbing the remainder of the grate.
Our invention is designed to accomplish these results, and in the drawings we have shown a construction which we have found operates successfully in practice, but it will be evident that changes may be made in the construction, the arrangement of the parts may be varied and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of our invention, and we do not, therefore, desire to be limited inevery instance to the exact form as herein shown and described, but desire to make such changes as may be necessary. We desire it further understood that the lifting fire bars can be arranged for use on any suitable grate con struction and that we desire to use thesame there in conjunction with rocking choppers or not as may be necessary, and that further we may, in some instances, alternate the liftin fire bars and choppers or we may provide stationary grate bars at suitable points or we may make one section entirely of the lifting fire bars, the use and the arrangement of the parts depending upon conditions.
1 designates a frame or portion thereof of a shaking grate of any suitable construction and 2 designates choppers which are suitably mounted in order to be rocked, each of said choppers in thepresent instance being mounted upon the chopper bars 3 which are angular, and one or more of the choppers being provided with a depending portion 4: to which the rocking mechanism can be attached in any suitable manner.
It will be understood that we may mount our lifting fire bars directly between the choppers, or, as we have shown in the drawings, we may provide the stationary fire bars 5 which are suitably supported in any desired manner and which are adapted to. rest preferably on a suitable portion of the frame 1 and can be lifted from position or returned thereto by hand.
6 designates the hollow lifting fire bars suitably positioned, the same having the sides or wings 7 with the openings or slots 8 therethrough, and the front 9 being provided with slots or recesses 10, it being understood and noted that the slots are provided for the purpose of permitting a free passage th'erethrough. The front wall 9 is curved downwardly a suitable distance and is provided with the sides 11, between which and the sides 7 is provided a curved Isolot or recess 12 on each side of the lifting 13 designates a suitable opening or bearing formed in the sides 7 with which communicates a slot 14 also formed in the sides 7 and which slot 14 is narrower than the diameter of the opening 13, but which is capable of passing a chopper bar 3.
15 designates a sleeve or collar which is provided with an angular opening 16 to receive the angular bar 8. The exterior of the sleeve is preferably circular and each end thereof on opposite sides is provided with a cutaway portion 17 forming the necks 18, which latter are of suitable size to freely pass through the slot 14 formed in the sides 7. Extending from said sleeve on the opposite ends thereof are the lugs 19 which are adapted in certain positions of the bar 8 and sleeve 15 to engage with the sides 7 of the lifting fire bar 6, it being understood that the circumference of the said sleeve 15'is adapted to suitably fit the bearing 13 in the lifting fire bar 6, and that said sleeve serves as the pivot for the lifting fire bar in its movement and also to lock the same in its proper position. The sides 7 extend downwardly and rearwardly a suitable distance, forming the extension or arm 20 and to a suitable position thereof is pivoted or otherwise secured a bar 21 which is connected with a suitable actuating mechanism for the lifting fire bars, .it being noted that the said arm 20 extends to a point back of or to the rear of the pivotal support of the lifting fire bar in order to increase the leverage and so the ease of actuation of the said lifting fire bars.
22 designates a circular spool or collar which .is adapted to seat on one of the chopper bars 8and which is of suitable diameter in order to engage with the walls of the curved slot or recess 12, in order to assist in guiding the lifting fire bar in its movement.
From the above it will be understood when the chopper bar 3 and sleeve or collar 15 is in the position seen in Fig. 1, which is the normal position, that the lugs 19 are in engagement with the sides 7 of the lifting bar and the necks 18 of the lifting bar are not in alinement with the slots 14 in the sides 7, so that the lifting fire bar is locked in position and while it can be actuated around the sleeve 15 as a pivot, the lifting bar cannot be removed. By the proper actuation or rotation of the chopper bar 3 supporting the sleeve 15, the necks 18 on said sleeve may be brought into alinement with the slot 14 in the sides 7, at which time the lifting fire bar can be removed by lifting the same, as will be evident, since the slots 14 can pass the necks 18. It will be noted that no lateral movement of the sleeve 15 -along the bar 3 is necessary, one movement only being necessary, since the proper rotation of the bar 8 carrying the sleeve 15,
places the parts in position to release the lifting fire bar 6.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a shaking grate, a supporting bar, a series of lifting fire bars, means for actuating the same, and independent means on said supporting bar for each lifting bar, each of said independent means serving to look a lifting bar to said supporting bar in the normal position of the supporting bar and adapted to release the said lifting bar so that it can be withdrawn laterally from the supporting bar when the supporting bar is rotated out of normal position, and each of said locking means serving as a pivot for the lifting bar locked thereby.
2. In a shaking grate, a supporting bar, a series of hollow lifting fire bars each having a bearing, means for actuating said lifting fire bars, and a sleeve for each of said lifting fire bars mounted on'said supporting bar and seated in a bearing, each sleeve locking a lifting fire bar to said supporting bar in the normal position of said supporting bar and adapted to release the said lifting fire bar so that it can be withdrawn laterally from the supporting bar when said supporting bar is rotated out of normal position.
3. In a shaking grate, a supporting bar, a series of hollow lifting fire bars each having a bearing, means for actuating said lifting fire bars, a sleeve for each of said lifting fire bars mounted on said supportin bar and seated in a bearing, each sleeve locIring a lifting fire bar to said supporting bar in the normal position of said supporting bar and adapted to release the said lifting fire bar so that it can be withdrawn laterally from the supporting bar when said supporting bar is rotated out of normal position, and a lug at the opposite end of each of said sleeves.
4. In combination, a supporting bar, a sleeve thereon and held against rotation with respect thereto, a lifting bar pivotally supported upon said sleeve, said lifting bar and sleeve being so formed that when these parts are in normal position relative to each other, the lifting bar is locked upon the sleeve but when by rotative movement these parts are changed from their normal positions, the said lifting bar may be removed transversely from said sleeve.
5. In a device of the character stated, a supporting bar rotatably mounted, a sleeve secured thereto and rotatable therewith, a lifting bar pivotally supported upon said sleeve, said lifting bar and sleeve being so formed as to be locked together in normal position but permitting said lifting bar to be moved transversely when said sleeve is rotated out of normal position, and lugs 011 said sleeve to prevent lateral movement thereof relative to said lifting bar.
6. In a device of the character stated, a supporting bar rotatably mounted, a sleeve secured thereto and rotatable therewith, said sleeve having a reduced portion, a lifting bar having a circular opening adapted to receive said sleeve andhaving a slot connecting therewith narrower than the diameter of said opening, said lifting bar and sleeve being locked with respect to each other when in their normal position but when rotary relative movement occurs between the two parts the reduced portion is positioned in line with the said slot and the 15 lifting fire bar can be removed transversely from the sleeve.
