Description

G. B. MuLEOD. BOILER SETTING. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 19, 1903.
Patented July 19, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. MGLEOD, OF WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA.
BOILER-SETTING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MoLnon, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, re-
siding at Vindsor, county of Essex, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boiler-Settings, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as wil enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to boiler settings; it has for its object an improved fire resisting facing and finishing for the arches in which the boilers are set.
The sides of the fire-box and the cover to the smoke box are especially exposed to the destructive action of the fire, and in practice these parts are destroyed much more rapidly than the other parts of a setting in which the boiler is arranged, and the object of this invention is to provide a water lined, or water containing, box, or tubes, which is used in place of brick at the sides of the fire box, and over the smoke box where the flame of the fire turns to pass through the fire fines to the front of the boiler.
The drawing shows the device in opera tion, parts of the wall and some parts of the iron boxes or tubes, which are used in place of brick at the sides of the fire box, and over the smoke box where the flame of the fire turns to pass through the fire fines to the front of the boiler.
The drawing shows the device in operation, parts of the wall and some parts of the iron boxes or tubes are broken away.
1 indicates the brick-work in which the boiler is set. At the sides of the fire box, just above the grate (which is not shown in the present drawing) are placed iron boxes or tubes 2 and 3, made from sheets of iron held together with stay bolts 4, to be sufficiently strong to withstand the pressure that may be produced in them by the generation of steam; at the rear of the boiler over the smoke box, is a similar iron receptacle for water, made as abox or tube, and arranged to cover the opening which is ordinarily made at the rear of the boiler where the flame and hot products of combustion turn on their way from the fire-box to the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filedSeptember 19, 1908.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Serial No. 453,811;
smoke stack 6. This box 5 is also made of fiat plates of iron held together by staybolts and made strong and substantial. These iron boxes or tubes are preferably put into communication with the boiler, so that the water travels from the boiler through them, and returns to the boiler at a lower level. Thus the pipe 7 leads from the boiler just above the high water line, into the box 5, and the pipe 8leads from the box 5 into the box 8. The boxes 2 and 3 are connected by a connecting pipe 9, and one or both of them is connected into the under part of the boiler by a pipe 10. Thus connected up, there is no necessity for an independent water connection to the boxes, although this invention is not confined to a system of protective boxes, in which there is an intermediate connection between the interior of the boxes and the interior of the boiler, and the principal object of the invention is to protect the brick-work, and a secondary object is to utilize the heat imparted to these protected boxes or tubes, to heat the water which is converted into steam for the purposes for which steam is used.
What I claim is In a boiler furnace having a fire box, a boiler having fire fiues, side and end walls surrounding the boiler, vertically disposed protection chambers adapted to contain water fitting against said side walls at a point adjacent the fire box and extendin substantially from top to bottom thereo, a horizontally disposed protection chamber adapted to contain water, said chamber resting upon the top of the furnace walls at a point to the rear of the boiler above the fire fines and constituting a cover, a steam conduit leading from the steam space of the boiler into the horizontally disposed chamber, w'ater conduits leading from the vertically disposed chambers to the water space of the boiler, and communicating pipes between the horizontally disposed protecting cover and the vertically disposed protecting chambers.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. MoLEOD.
