LOUIS N. KELLY, OF LANCASTER, NEW YORK.
BRIDLE-BIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 21, 1909.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Serial No. 491,236.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS N. KELLY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bridle bits, with the object in view to provide a humane, safe, and sanitary bit, suited to the mouth conditions of all horses, and to obviate the use of rubber, leather or other unsanitary and destructible bit covering material now in vogue.
A further object is to provide a bit so constructed as to prevent vicious or unruly animals from taking it in their teeth, or from turning their heads sidewise and maintaining that position, to the annoyance and danger of the driver or the injury of the animal.
With these objects in view and others which my invention will suggest after a detailed descri tion of its parts, I give the following as a ull and exact description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of these specifications, wherein- Figure 1, is a sectional view of the bit. Fig. 2, is an elevation with dotted line showing bit rod. Fig. 3, is a view of the cylindrical mouth piece with dotted lineshowing grooves in the interior surface. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view at the point a a, showing the tongues on the bit rod disengaged from the grooves in the interior of the mouth piece. Fig. 5, is a transverse sectional view at a point a-a, showing the tongues on the bit rod engaged in the grooves of the mouth piece, making a solid bit.
In describing my invention in detail and with reference to the drawings, 1 is a cylindrical mouth piece of a bridle bit, provided with outwardly extending flanges 22, and interior horizontal grooves, extending inwardly from each end, 3-3, adapted to receive tongues, 4-4 on bit rod 5. Rod 5 is provided with enlarged ends, with shoulders, 6-6, abutting the flanges 22 on the mouth piece 1, preventing the mouth piece from slipping or sliding from side to side, giving solidity to the bit and preventing injury to the animals mouth. In the ends of rod 5 are suitable apertures for bit rings, brazed after therings are inserted. Rings are provided with shoulders, 8-8, at the place of intersection of apertures, the inserted portion smaller than the exterior portion, as shown by dotted line 9 9.
From this detailed description it will be seen that my invention provides a cylindrical mouth piece, 1, with outwardly projecting flanges at the ends, 2-2, and grooves on the interior surface 3-3; the flanges abutting the shoulders 6-6 of the bit rod 5. This construction prevents the rod from sliding in the mouth piece, but allows the rod to revolve freely, preventing injury to the animal and restrains him from turning his head sidewise. The interior grooves 33 receive the tongues 4- 1: on the bit rod making a solid bit if desired by the driver. The shoulders, 8-8 on the rings at their intersection of the apertures in the enlarged ends of the bit rod prevent the rings slipping through the apertures, producing a solid, firm and unyielding ring, assuring a steady and even pull on the bit.
Having described my invention what I claim is,
1. A bridle bit, consisting of a cylindrical mouth piece having longitudinal grooves integrally formed therein adapted to inter mittently engage the longitudinal tongues on the revoluble bit rod, a revoluble bit rod having longitudinal tongues adapted to intermittent engagement with the said grooves, and means for engaging and disengaging the same, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A bridle bit, consisting of a revoluble tongued bit rod in locking and unlocking relation to the interior grooves of the cylindrical mouth piece, an interiorly grooved cylindrical mouth piece adapted to intermittently engage the tongues of the said bit rod, and rings in the ends of the said revoluble bit rod adapted to lock and unlock the said tongues and grooves, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a cylindrical mouth piece having interior grooves, With a revoluble longitudinally tongued bit rod adapted to engagement and disengagement With the said grooves, and having end'rings adapted to lock and unlock the said tongues and grooves, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LOUIS N. KELLY.
