Another object of myinvention is to provide for dispensing at will with the automatic cross feeding or variation in the throw of the ribbon and to provide instead for throwing the vibrating ribbon predetermined extents in order to make use at pleasure of ditl'erent ribbon fields and )articularly'in machines which employ a sliiftable platen.
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
To the above ends my invention consists in the features of construction. combinations of devices and arrangements o parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention may be carried out. in various ways, one of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical front to rear sectional iew of so much of a front-strike typewritihg machine as is necessary to a clear mulerstamling of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section of said machine. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of certain of the ribbon controlling devices to which my invention more especially relates. said devices including a shiftable frame. Fig. 4 is a plan view of said shift able frame and of an eccentric which is adapted to control the same. Fig. 5 is a view partly in section of said eccentric and its support. Figs. 6 and 7 are vertical sectional views showing in ditl'erent relationships the ribbon controlling devices of Fig. I5 and associate parts. A roller 12 is mounted on the platen carrier below the platen and 00- operates with a shiftable guide rail 13, which is part of a shift frame comprisin vertical side bars 14 and a cross rod 15. be lower ends of the bars 14 are each pivotally connected to a shift lever 16 mounted on a rock shaft 17 and provided with a key 18 depressible to operate the platen shifting means and so raise the platen carrier and platen to upper case position, the shifting movement being independent of the carriage proper.

A ribbon 25 is wound on vertical ribbon spools 26 one arranged at each sideot' the machine below the top plate, each ribbon spool being secured at the forward end of a horizontal rearwardly extending shaft 27. In order not to confuse unduly the main sheets of drawing, the means for feeding the ribbon longitudinally is separately illustrated in the diagrannnatic plan view (Fig. 12). As shown in this figure, each shaft 27 has secured to its rear end a beveled pinion 28 which is adapted to mesh with a beveled pinion 25) secured to a driving shaft 30 connected by beveled pinions 3i and 32 with the spring drum "2% in such a way that the shaft is turned by the spring drum as the latter moves to advance the car iage in printing direction. The shaft 30 is movable endwise independently of the pinion 31 which has a sliding connection therewith, the endwise movement of the shaft. being preferably etl'ected automatically and operating to'connect the pinions 2:) alternately with their associate pinions 28 so that: the ribbon may be fed alternately back and forth from one ibbon spool .26 to the other.
IiIidway between the ribbon spools the ribbon is threaded through an upright vibratory ribbon carrier or vibrator 33 which is supported and guided on a guide 34 fixed to the frame of the machine. The lower end of the vibrator carries a 'cross pin 3:) which is engaged by the slotted forward end of an operating lever 36 pivoted at 36 to a bracket 36 fixed to the top plate. The rear arm of the lever 36 is formed with an arcuate slot 37 which is engaged by a pin 38 extending laterally from the top of a vertically disposed link 39, the lower end of said link being pivotally connected with the horizontal arm of a.bell crank lever 40 pivoted at -11 toa. bracket. 42 screwed to the top of the case -1 at the rear thereof. The downwardly extending arm of the bell crank 40 is pivotally connected by a horizontally disposed and forwardly extending link 43 with a crank arm 44 fixed to and rising from the rock shaft 23. A coiled spring 45 connects the. link 3!) with a pin 46 fixed to the bracket 42, said spring constantly urging the link 39 rearward and tending to maintain the pin 38 at the rear of the slot 37. The construction is such that a depression of one of the key levers 12 will act on the universal bar 20 to rock the shaft 23 rearward. causing the link 4 to act through the bell crank it) on the link 3!) to pull said link 22!) down ward, thereby actuating the lever 3G and causing the forward arm of the latter to rise and lift or throw the vibra tor 33 upward so as to bring opposite the printing point on the platen the printing portion of the ribbon or that. portion which is between the bifurcations or arms 33* comprised in the head of the vibrator.
Obviously the extent of throw of the vibrator may be varied by varving the re lationship between certain of the vibrator actuating devices aforesaid. In the present case the point of operative engagement between the pin 38 and the slotted lever 36 is varied. thus changing the widthwise portion of the ribbon presented to the types.
Means are-provided for automatically and progressively moving the link 39 and cansmg the pm 38 to move step-by-step toward and away from the pivot 36, with the result that the throw of the vibrator is automatically varied so as to change progressively the widthwise portion of the ribbon presented to the types. \Vhen automatic means of this character are employed, it is commonly in connection with a ribbon of uniform character, and not a ribbon of dual character like the ribbon 25 shown-herein. Said automatic means comprises in the present instance c entric devices which are connected with and operated by the ribbon drivmg shaft 30, said devices communicating a rec procatory movement to a cam member which operates during movement in one direction to swing the link 39 forward and which, during its ret urn movement, permits the spring 45 to swin the link 39 rearward (see Ifags. l to 5). said eccentric devices comprise an eccentric member 47- having an eccentric wr-king face 48 and at its lower end a concentric neck 49. The eccentric member is slidably mounted on a vertical shaft- 50 but is forced to turn with said shaft, the connection between the two comprising a spline 51 fast on the eccentric and which engages a longitudinal groove 52 in the shaft 50. Said shaft is supported on an angular bracket 53 depending from the under. side of the top late and is held from dropping out of sai bracket by the hub 54 of a beveled pinion 55 which is secured to the upper end of the shaft 50 above the horizontal arm of the bracket Said beveled pinion meshes with a beveled pinion 56 fixed to the driving shaft 30, which shaft passes through an opening in the vertical arm of the bracket 50. The beveled pinion 56 is provided with a hub 57 which is splined to the shaft 30,
the construction permitting endwise-movement of the shaft independent of the pinion. Rotary movements are connnumcated from the shaft through the pinions 5t; and 53 to,
the shaft 50 and the eccentric member. A leaf spring 53 seeurul lo the bracket 53 acts against the eccentric member. tending constantly to press it dowmvard and to maintain the lower end of the spline 51 in contact with a limiting pin .3!) at the lower end of the shaft 50 (Fig. 5).

During the printing movements of the carriage the driving shaft 30 will turn and conunuuicate rotary movements to the eccentric member. causing the eccentric face 48 to co-act with the left-hand and righthand inner faces of the opening tit) so as to move the frame (32 rogressively along the rod (54 first in one direction and then oppo- 'sitely, the extent of back and forth movement corresponding with the throw of the eccentric 45. as will be understood from a consideration of the full and dotted line positions of the head til and ccc ntric 48 shown in Fig. 4. The front and re 1' inner faces of the opening 60 are far enough apart spring 45. As a result the 'pin its will operate at the rear end of the slot 37 and will throw the vibrator upward to present the upper edge portion of the ribbon to the types at printing operation. During subsequent printing operations the eccentric 4s will operate on the frame (32 to slide the same rightward along the rod (34 until the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 4 is reached. after which the return movement; of the frame will take place. As the frame (32 slides rightward it operates to slide the sleeve 69 rightward along the rod ti-l. thereby causing a rightward movement of the entire cam member 70. the cam edge 7:! acting against the link 35). swinging the same forward against the pull of the spring and moving the pin 38 forward in the-slot 3T. 'hen the rightward limit of movement of the cam member is reached. he forward edge 7:? of the portion 73' will be in engagement with the link 39 and the pin 38 will be in the position shown in Fig. ll. The result of the progressive movement of the pin 38 will be that the throw of the operating lever and ribbon vibrator willgradually increase and the points at which the type impressions occur on the ribbon will gradually approach the bottom edge thereof. During the return movement of the cam member the linlt 3!) will be swung back by the spring 42 as the cam edge 72" moves leftward. and consequently the pin 33 will again approach the rear end of the slot 37. Durin the change of the ribbon widthwise it. is also being fed lengthwise from spool to spool so that the result will he that the type impressions will follow a serpentine course lengthwise of the ribbon from one edge to the'other.
During the back and forth movements of the cam member the. pin 75 will move to and fro transversely of the slot 76 without disturbing the arm 77: but so that the connection between the pin and slot will be always etfectivc to cause the cam member to swing upward whenever the platen is shifted to upper case position. The effect of this upward swing of the cam member will be discnssed after the operation of the mechanism for two-color work. or similar work,has been explained.
\Vhen a ribbon like 2.), which is divided longitmlinally so as to provide two fields or stripes (1 aml b of diti'crent' characteristics. such as ditferent colors. is-to be employed. the. automatic mechanism comprising the eccentric 48 is preferably thrown out of operation and the link 39 is set by hand in either one of a plurality of predetermined positions so that the vibrator may be thrown predetermined extents at pleasure in order to present either of the fields a and b to the types. The means for carrying out the e operations comprise a shift frame T9 which is clearly shown in Fig. 3 and also appears in Figs. 1, 2. 6 and 7. The frame 79 is U- shaped, having opposite parallel arms 30 connected at one end by a cross piece 81. The arms 80 pass through pairs of narrow parallel vertical slots (33 in the frame cars (33. Said arms 80 are sup orted by the bracket 67. engaging in para lel guide slots 82 formed in the ears 66 of said bracket 67.

Suitable connections ctmvenientlv controlled from the front of the machine are provided for shifting the frame 79. Such connections are shown in 2' and 11 and comprise a rod 89 adjustably secured to the cross piece 81. said rod extending rightward and being provided with a pin '90 engaging a slot 91 iii an upright crank arm 92 fixed tcf'a rock shaft 9 3. Said rock shaft has a bearing 94 fixed to the base 1 at the righthand side thereof and extends forward through the right-hand front corner post 2, taking a bearing therein. An npwardlvextending arm 95 is fixed to the rock shaft forward of the corner post. said arm terminating in a pointer 95 and being provided with a. finger piece 96 at the front and with a pointed lug 97 at the rear. The lug 97 cooperates with holes 98. 99 and 100 in the. corner post to hold the arm and connected parts in set positions. Suitable indicating marks may be provided contiguous to the holes for coiipcration with the pointer 95. The arm 95 is sulliciently flexible to permit the disengagement of the big 97 from one of the holes and its reiingagcment with another of the holes when the finger piece 96 is operated to rock the shaft 9; Stop. pins 101 on the corner post coi'iperute with the arm 95 to limit. the extent of rocking movement. When the shaft is rocked its movement is transmitted from the arm 92 to the rod 89 and shift frame 79 so that said shift frame may he slid from the Fig. 2 position to the Fig. 6 or Fig. 7 positions.
