Description
alluded gime @aient @Mitica CHARLESC. SAVERY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Leners Peten: N 96,486, ered November 2, 1869.
vIIIMPROVEID WATER-COOLER AND REFRIGERATOR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Ptent and making part of the same.
To all whomjt 'may concern:
Be litknown that I, CHARLES C. SAVERY, of Philadelphia, in the count-y of Philadelphia, and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented -an Improved Water'- -Cooler and Refrigerator; and Ido hereby declare that Athe following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part of this` specilication- Figure l being a front elevation of the water-cooler and refrigerator, setir'r brick-work.
Figure 2, a central vertical section of the same, in
a plaue'cutting from front to rear thereof'.
Figure', a vertical section thereof, in a plane cutting from side to side, atright angles to the former Section;
vFigure 4, a horizontal section of the same, looking upward; l
Like letters'designate corresponding parts in .all of the figures. Y
rllrisinvention is a combined water-cooler and refrigerator', nrade 'of cast-iron, and having the inner surfaces of both the air-chamber A and water-tank B enamelled, as indicated at fi, and also the outside ot' the bottom of the water-'tank (which is cast or formed separately from the air-chamberl similarly enamelled, the same being partly exposed to moist-ure vin the interior of the air-chamber, so that no part is liable to oxidation.
' The invent-ion is designed especially as a cellar-refrigerator, and it is enclosedin suitable brick-work, C, or otherwise set, so as to be stationary, or a lixture of the cellar or room in which it is located; and
herein is constituted one feature of improvement.
The brick-work surrounds andprotects it from the heat ofthe surrounding air, and there may be a door, lr, opening' into the brick-work, iu-addition to the door s, ot' the refrigerator proper.
The most import-ant feature of lmy invention consists in the inclination ofthe top a, of the air-chamhet A, backward from the front opening or door thereof', andthe formation of an jopening, c, in the same,
occupying thel greater part thereof, and having a.
curved or. semicircular form ou the front edge, or such. other form as to eii'ect the purpose intended, namely,
to conduct the water, which condenseson the" under sur-face of the ahr-chamber top, backward, so that it will run down the back of the air-chamber, and not drip upon-the articles placed in the refrigerator'.
The bottom b, 'of the water-tank above, is also inclined so as to t'over the opening Vc, and'cov'er the .sa-me. 1
A depression, instead of an opening, in the top ot' the air-chamber A, with similarly-shaped edges, would effect the same object, but not so conveniently as the construction represented.
llrc bottom d, of the air-chamber, is also slightly inclined from iront to back, as represented in lig, 2,
for the purpose ot' conducting the drippings to the back part of 'the chamber, and of preventing their flowing out at the front opening. The water'tlrns collected muy be drained off, through an outlet at the back and bottom of the air-chamber, or it rnay be wiped up with a sponge or cloth, as occasion requires,
T lre water-tank being east Vseparately from thetairchamber, it'is secured n'pon tlre'top ot' tlrelatter by means olf two operror forked lugs, ff, projecting from each sideot' the tank, and staples or ears, g g, in cor'- responding positions, cast upon the sides ofthe air-,-
lchamber, and connecting the said lugs and` cars, respectively, by bolts, h h.,hooki'ng into the ears, and secured in the lugs by screw-threads and nuts. The, jointsv between the two castings are' then made air- -cooler and refrigerator, having lthe air-chamber A, of
iron, enau'relled on the interiorsurtace, and its bottoni d inclined from the door", in its front side, backward,
.and the water-tank B, otf iron, erranrelled both ou the interiorand under surface, and secured upon the top of the air-chamber as herein specified.
Also, in combination with the foregoing, the semicircular' or equivalent opening c, in the inclined top a of the air-chamber, beneath the bottom of the watertank, for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES C. SAVERY.
