Be it known that I, FRANK DAVIS, a resident of La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Vvisconsin, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to plows, and more particularly to that ty as in which carryingt rame and mechanism for raising and lowering the plow or plows are employed, such type being generally known as riding plows.

The present invention designs to provide a construction of plow-shittin; mechanism in which the sweep of the operating lever is disposed for convenient operation by the foot of the operator and in which a differential or compound leverage is attained by which the greatest power is applied during that portion of the lifting or lowering movement of the plow in which it inecessary, 1'. 0., when the soil resists its movement.

The invention is illustrated-as applied to a gang plow, although it w'll be understood that it may be applied to other types of plows.

In the position illustrated ll Fig. 3, the plow being then raised, stud 49 and the seat 50 form a druid-center lrx-king-device between the lever arm 42 which is pivoted on the bail and link 47 which is pivoted as at 46 to the main frame. A notch 49 is also provided for similarl locking the plow in a somewhat lower position, this being for the convenience of a rider with short legs who tiuds it inconvenient to lift the plow to the extreme upper position shown in Fig. 3. A spring 51 is applied to a rod 52 which is pivotally connected as atto arm 42 of the foot-lever to yieldingly hold the foot-lever so that the fmt-lever will be yieldinglv held in position to prevent witln'lrawal of the stud 49 from its seat. 50 when the lowering-connection is locked to hold the plow in raised position.

bracket- 44 and, being yieldingly held, permits the. foot-lever to be swung by the operator to release the lowering-connection. For convenience in construction, plural links 7 are provided which are cross eonneeted b bolt 48 and lever-arm 42 is disposed between said links.
The operation of the plow lowering-mechanism will be as follows: Assuming the plow to brain raised position (Fi 3) the operator will depness lever 38 and during the initial movement thereof said lever will swing about crank 20 as a fulcrum and notch 50 oflinkstrut 47. Rod 52, which is yieldingly held by spring 51, extends loosely through slot, 54 in bracket 44, yielding sufiieiently to permit the lever 38 to be swung into position to disengage the stud 49 from notch 50. The lowering-connection will then be unlocked so that lever 38 will be free to be. further depressed. During further de res- SlO'l of the treadle 41 on lever 38 the ront end of said lever will be pressed against upward movement by rod 52 and the crank 20 and plow will be lowered until the reach the position shown in Fig. 3. During the initial lowering movement of'erank 20 stud 48 on lever-arm 42 will remain in the horizontal portion of the angular slot; 43 and resist backward movement of leverarm 42 so that: the foot-lever 38 will be operated about said stud as a movable fulcrum and then as the lowering movement of the crank 20 continues the stud wilt slide backwardly in the slot 43 and pass into the end 43 of said slot. The angular slot thus guides the strut-link not pass into either of the notches 49 or 50 during the lowering operation of the plow. During this lowering movement the stud and slot connection between the link 47 and so that. stud 49 will l t t lever arm 42, resultin a gradual increase of the leverage applied by the footdevcr to the crank so that. during the latter portion of the lowering-movement, when the plow is entering the soil, greater leverage is attained than during the initial lowering movement when there is little resistance to the lowering of the plow. Furthermore, as a result of this construction, the sweep of lever 38 is arranged for substantially vertical movement and convenient operation by the operator and the power is differentially applied. In the embodiment of the invention shown, lever 62 has a sliding connection with the outer end of arm 60 which is bifurcated and provided with a friction roller 63' which is engaged by the lever. This sliding connection causes variation of the point of a plication of power between the lever and tie arm to effect the differential operation aforesaid. An automatic locking device is provided for securing the plow in lowered position, this being operable by the foot-lever so that when the operator depresses the foot-lever 62 the initial movement thereof will release the lockin -device. This locking device comprises a 0gor latch 64 which is pivotally connected to bolt 65 at the outer end of arm 60, is yieldingly pressed into operative position by a. rod 66 pivoted to a log 67 on the latch and Dog (3-1 is bifurcated and the lover 62 passes therethrough and is provided with :1 lug (3!) adapted to engage arm 60 to limit its movument in one direction by spring 68. In the lifting mechanism the several parts thereof are sustained so that all )arts are freely shiftahle in response to the lever and the mechanism in its entirety is operable with case. The lifting-mechanism is restored to operative position by the lowering mechanism and vice versa.
