SHEET-REGISTER DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CHES IRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of l/ isconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Register Devices, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention pertains to the registering of sheets of paper'upon which a printing operation is to be performed, and relates more particularly to automatic registering devices for use in connection with presses of what is known as the Gordon type.
Attemptshave been made from time to time to provide an eiiicient automatic sheet register for platen presses but in) device has as yet been produced which has satisfied all the requirements of the case.
It is the object of my invention, therefore,
.to provide a certain, efiieient. and easily manipulated device for registering the sheets of paper to be operated upon in a prlntmg press.
I have embodied my invention in several devices, one of which I have chosen as satisfactorily indicating the various features thereof. This embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which" Figure 1 is a plan of the platen of a Gordon press showing the gripper fingers raised to permit paper to be fed and showing the register arm as just receiving a sheet of paperrFig. 2 is a fragmentary View similar to Fig. 1, but showing the gripper fingers partially closed and the sheet moved by the register arm against the end stops, this view also illustrates in dotted lines the position of the parts when the sheet has been moved against the side stop; Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the parts in the position indicated in full lines in Fig. 2, and; Figs. 4, 5, (3, 7 and 8 are detail views of various portions of the registering device.

the sheet engages when the sheet is in proper register. nary gripper bar 14. which carries the gripper fingers 15, the function of which 1s to retain the sheet in place during the printing operation and prevent the sheet from adhering to the type when the platen recedes. The above are among the ordinary equipments of a Gordon press.
The object of my invention is effected by providing automatic means for moving the sheet first against one set of stops and then against the other, by which movements the sheet is brought into exact register for printing, and the means for effecting these movements of the sheet which are illnstrated in the accompanying drawings are constituted as follows.
.\.-bracket 16 (Fig. 4) having forwardly projecting hooks 17 for engaging beneath the platen is secured to the platen by means of clamping blocks 18 and 19 which are attached to the bracket by means of screws and engage at their ends over the front tympan-retaining bail 11. By loosening the clamping blocks 18 and 19, the register device may be adjusted to any desired lateral position on the platen. A lug 20 extends upwardly and slightly rearwardly from the bracket 16 and serves as a post to which a hook lever 21 is pivoted. The hook lever 21 (Fig. 5) surrounds three sides of the gripper bar 14 and has a pair of upwardly and forwardly extending lugs 22 which enibrace the lug 20 of the bracket 16 and are pivotally connected thereto. One of the lugs 22 is formed near the base thereof with a pivot hole adapted to receive a horizontal pivot pin 23. The horizontal pivot pin 23 is provided with a vertical pivot pin 24 (Fig. 7) and forms a compound joint between the lug 22 and a lost motion lever 25 which is pivoted about the pin 24. The lever 25 carries the register arm, and it will be readily seen that, as the gripper bar 14 closes toward the platen and the gri per fingers are thereby moved toward the p aten to grip the sheet, the lower end of the lug 22 and therefore the lost motion lever 25 will'be moved away from the platen.
It is this movement which effects the registering of the sheet. The lost motion lever 25 has a laterally extending arm 26, the end of whichenters an elongated slot 27 with Pivoted to the platen is the ordi-.

The register arm 29 is beveled to conform with the slideway 28 and is of slightly greater width, the slideway being formed with a longitudinal slot 30 which enables the metal of the lever held against the tympan by the weight of the parts and will slide closely thereupon during its movements to and fro. The outer end of the register armisrformed' with a knife edge in order that ,it; may readily enter beneath the sheets'of paper when they are placed upon the platen. Upon the outer end of the register arm is mounted, a spring gripping finger 30, the upper end of which is turned up to enable the sheets to enter readily between it and the register arm 29. so' as to form a frictional connection between the gripping finger and the register arm in order to enable the outer end of the former to be adjusted to the requiredv distance from that pfthe latter. l i
The operation" of the device s as follows: When a sheet of paper is fed the platen against the end stops 12 its front edge will enter between the gripping finger30 and the register arm 29. When a sheet is being fed the gripper fingers 15 will of course be in the position shown, that is, open. As the gripper bar 14 closes toward the latch during the movement of the latter into arallelism with the bed of the ress, the 0st knotion lever 25, together wit the re 'ster arm 29, will be pulled forward over t e platen,
' whereby the sheet will be pulled down against the end stops 12, that is, if it was not originally placed in engagement winithese stops. If the sheet was originally placed in engagement with the end stops 12,;or after it has been pulled into engagement therewith by the register arm, the latter will merely slip forward over the paper, maintaining the register until the parts reach the condition shown in full lines in Fig. 2, in
which the arm 26 of the lost motion lever has just touched the-front end of the slot 27 of the clampin block 19. After the arm 26 strikes the en movement of the gripper bar will effect a rocking of the lost motion lever and register arm toward the right about the vertical pivot 24, the effect bein was not placed in the correct position against the side stop 13, it will be moved agamst this stop by the register arm. If, however, the sheet was originally placed in the correct position, or after the sheet has been moved against the side stop as above described, the arm 29 and gripping finger 30 will merely slide upon the sheet and maintain it in its register. The parts of the slot 27 the further that, if the sheet rst instance in its are then in the condition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the sheet being shown as in perfect register. When the printing opera-' tion has been performed and the platen begins to return to the feeding position and the grippers 15 consequently begin to open, the register arm will be moved backward over the tympanin its inclined position until the latter part of the movement of the platen, when the arm 26 of the lost motion lever will strike the rear end of the stop 27 whereupon it and the register arm will be rocked back into the positlon shown in Fig. 1 ready for receiving and registering another sheet. It will thus be seen that the sheets, ifnot fed correctly in the first instance, are automatically moved into engagement first withthe end stops and then against the side sto wherebya perfect register is insured. f the sheets are fed correctly in the first instance their by the device. The device is simple and quite certain in its operation, moreover, it may be very readily adjusted to suit the particular requirements of each size and kind of paper used and may be quickly and easily attached to any ordinary press of theGordon or other similar type.
' The automatic registering device according to my invention is exceedingl useful in connection with hand fed presses ut its employment is particularly advantageous in connection with presses having automatic feeding devices, such, for instance, as that described in my co ending application Serial No. 508,896, file July 22, 1909.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is:

9. The combination with h an end stop and a side stop thereon, of a lost motion lever having means for operating upon a sheet of paper, and means for moving said lever first toward one of said stops and then toward the other stop, whereby the sheet of paper is moved first against one stop and then against the other.
13. The combination with a platen having said lever and the gripper bar whereby said a platen having an end stop and a side stop thereon, of a register arm for operating upon a sheet of paner, a lost motion lever connected with said register arm in such manner that the latter may be longitudinally adjusted relatively to the lever, and means for effecting first a longitudinal and then a lateral move ment of said lost motion lever, whereby the sheet is brought first against the end stop and then against the side stop.
14. The combination with a platen having an end stop and a side stop thereon, of a register arm provided with a gripping memher for receiving a sheet of paper, a .lost motion lever carrying said register arm, and means for efl'ecting first a longitudinal and then a lateral movement of said lost' motionlever, whereby the sheet is brought first against the end stop and then against the sido stop.
15. The combination with a platen having an end stop and a side stop thereon, of a register arm provided with an adjustable 30 I ment of said device, and means carried by gripping member for receiving a sheet of paper, a lost motlon lever carrying said register arm, and means for efiecting first a longitudinal and then a lateral movement of said lost motion lever, whereby the sheet is brought first against the end stop and then against the side stop.
16. The combination with a platen having an end stop and a side stop thereon and a gripper bar operatively connected with said platen, of a bracket carried by said platen adj acent fsaid gripper bar and having an upwardly extending lug, a lever pivoted to the lug of said bracket and engaging said gripper bar, stops carried by said bracket, a lost motion lever pivoted to said firstnamed lever and having a portion thereof extending between said stops, and a register arm carried by said 10st motion lever and operating upon a sheet of paper to bringthe same into engagement, first with the end stop and then with the side stop of the platen.
