PUZZLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS A. BARNES, of Pasadena, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a puzzle, the prob lem of which is to introduce a resilient steel or other metal band of comparatively large size into a small box or inclosure and it resides in certain novel features, which will be fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Reference is now had to the accompanying drawings, which represent, as an example, the preferred embodiment of my invention.

In these drawings-Figure l is a plan view of the steel band folded in its inclosure; Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view of the steel band extended; Fig. a is a view showing the first fold in the band to introduce it into the box; and Fig. 5 is a view showing the second fold or turn necessary for this purpose.

In said drawings a indicates the band which is preferably constructed of light resilient steel. This band, extended, is very much larger than the box I). Said box, if desired, may be provided with a cover (not shown).

In order to introduce the band into the cover, it is preferable to elongate the band slightly as shown in Fig. 3; then to give the hand one turn causing it to assume the form shown in Fig. 4, after which a second turn causes it to take the form of three convolutions as shown in Fig. 5, and upon releasing the band at this time its resiliency will cause it to lie fiat, or practically so, as in Figs. 1 and 2, allowing it to be introduced into the box and the cover moved to closed position.

The device is very simple and it is easy and inexpensive in construction, so that by its means an interesting and instructive puzzle may be provided at a trifling cost.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

The combination of a resilient metal band and a box or inclosure of less size than the said band, the band being capable of receiving a number of turns or folds causing it to assume the form of a number of convolutions lying in interlaid relation, whereby the band may be introduced into said box or inclosure.
