D. GORTESE.
RATGHET DRILL.
APPLIOATION FILED Nov. 5, 1909.
Patented July 19, 1910.
. /M. I WMMWM "UNTE S i DOMENIC oon'rnsn, or sroo'NER, Wisconsin.
RATGI-IET-DBILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Application filed November 5, 1909. Serial No. 526,473.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOMENIC Con'rnsn, citizen of the United States, residing at Spooner, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ratchet-drills or braces in which the oscillatory motion of the operating lever is employed to rotate the bit spindle and the feed screw.
The object of my invention is to produce a ratchet drill which will be simple in construction, and embodying novel means for rotating the feed screw.
My invention consists generally in a combination of bevel-gearing and ratchet mechanism for operating the drill and effecting the feed, as hereinafter to be described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numeral references are used to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional View of my drill. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates a feed-screw provided with right handed screw-threads 2. The feed screw 1 has a smooth cylindrical lower portion 3, at one end of which is integrally formed the ratchet wheel 1. A casing 5 provided with the pointed end 6, is screwthreaded to operate upon the feed screw 1 for feeding the bit hereinafter to be eX- plained. The casing 5 has a flanged lower end 7 which, when said casing 5 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, engages a cap 8 through which the portion 3 of feed screw 1 is journaled. The ratchet wheel at is novided with the centrally arranged depenc ing cylindrical portion 9, upon which is rotatably mounted an integral member comprising the ratchet wheel 10 and beveled gear 11. The balls 12 are arranged between the lower and upper sides of the ratchet wheels 4t and 10 respectively, for the purpose of reducing the friction between said ratchet wheels.
The operating lever 13, which may be of any desired length, has its inner end provided with the cylindrical collar 14:, said collar l t being arranged around the ratchet wheels l and 10, as shown in Fig. 1. The
upper edge of the collar 14 is arranged within the downwardly flanged portion 15 of cap 8, and balls 16 are arranged between said collar 1st and the under side of cap 8. A pin 17 passing radially through beveled gear 11, has its inner end arranged in a circumferential groove 18 upon projection 9 of ratchet wheel 1, wherebv the separation of ratchet wheel at and ratchet wheel 10 is prevented.
Below the collar 14, is arranged the stationary cylindrical casing 19, between which and said collar let, are the balls 20. The lower end of casing 19 is closed by a cap 21 arranged therein and held in place, as hereinafter described. Centrally 'of casing 19 is arranged the spindle 22, provided upon its upper end with the recess 23 within which the lower end of projection 9 is journaled. Said spindle 22 extends downwardly through a central opening in the cap 21 and is screw threaded externally beyond said cap for the reception of the permanent nut 24. The lower end of spindle 22 is provided with a socket 25 for the reception of the bit 26. The horizontally arranged ring shaped member 27 is disposed centrally of and Within casing 19, and is rigidly secured to one side of the same by means of screws 28. Spindle 22 passes through the center of said member 27, and is rotatable therein. The ring shaped member 27 is provided upon one side thereof with the cut out portion 29, Within which is arranged a beveled gear 30, rotatably mounted upon a portion 31 of member 27, said beveled gear being held in place by means of the nut 32. The beveled gear 30 is arranged to mesh above the same with the beveled gear 11, and to mesh below with the beveled gear 33, which is keyed as at 34, or otherwise non-rotatably mounted upon spindle 22.
The operating arm 13 is provided adjacent the collar 14, with the longitudinal superposed openings 35 and 36, within which are arranged the spring pressed pawls 37 and 38 respectively. The beveled ends of pawls 37 and 38 are faced in opposite directions, and are adapted to engage the teeth 39 and 10 upon ratchet wheels 4 and 10, respectively,
which teeth are also opposltely directed hand. The teeth 39 of the ratchet wheel4c are adapted to be rigidly engaged by pawl 37 when the operating arm 13 is oscillated toward the operator, whereby feed screw 1 is rotated within sleeve 5 for feeding the bit 26. Upon this inward movement of operating arm 13 pawl 38 will slip over teeth of ratchet wheel 10. When the arm 13 is oscillated away from the operator one of the teeth is rigidly engaged by pawl 38 whereby ratchet wheel 10 and beveled gear 11 will be rotated counter clockwise. This rotation of the beveled gear 11, will be imparted through the beveled gear 20, to the beveled gear 33, which will thus be rotated clock-wise, for operating the bit 26. Upon this outward movement of the arm 13, pawl 37 will slip over teeth 39 of ratchet wheel 3, and said ratchet wheel will not be rotated.
Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. In a ratchet drill the combination with a spindle adapted to hold a bit, of a beveled gear rigidly mounted thereon, a feed screw provided with a ratchet wheel rigidly connected thereto, said ratchet wheel being provided with a centrally arranged projection, an integrally formed ratchet wheel and beveled gear rotatably mounted upon said projection, a beveled gear meshing with said 1 first named and second named beveled gears, and an operating lever for alternately rotating said ratchet wheels in opposite directions, substantially as described.
2. In a ratchet drill, the combination with a spindle adapted to hold a bit, or" a beveled gear rigidly mounted thereon, a feed screw provided with a ratchet wheel rigidly connected thereto, said ratchet wheel being provided with a centrally arranged projection, an integrally formed ratchet wheel and beveled gear rotatably mounted upon said projection, a beveled gear arranged between said first named and second named beveled gears and meshing with the same, an operating lever provided with a cylindrical sleeve arranged around said ratchet wheels, said ratchet wheels having their teeth oppositely directed, and spring pressed pawls carried by said lever for engaging said ratchet wheels whereby the same may be alternately rotated in opposite directions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
