To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Bunny ll. Wm: MAN, *nsrnno H. Wuazuax, and Junsox (l. CLEMENT, citizens of the United States, 5 residing at Woodrnti. in the county of Phillips and State of Kansas. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Combination Lifting-Jacks and \Vire- Stretcher-s; and we do hereby declare the 0 following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will onable othersskilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
' Our invention relatesto new and useful 5 -im )rovements in combination lifting jacks an wire strctchers and our object is to provide means for raising diil'erent articles when desired and more especially the axles of a vehicle when it is desired to remove the wheel therefrom.
A further object is to provide means in connection with the lifting device, whereby the same may be used for tretching wires -or the like and a further ooject is to provide an extension for the lifting device whereby the same may be used for raising objects from a point adjacent the base of the liftin device.
Other 0 jects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the combination lifting jack and wire stretcher. Fig. 2isa sectionalview as seen on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. .5 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of lifting jack, and, Fig. 4 is a. detail View partly in section of the upper portion of that 0 form of lifting jack shown in Fig. 3.

Attached to the base 1 is a standard 5. which standard is formed by bending a piece of metal upon itself and securing the two sections thereof to the base; thereby (provided with a head .4, which is forming a slot-'6 the full length, the lower end of the standard having angular extensions '4', through which and the baw l are introduced bolts 8 and by means of which the standard is attached to the bane.
Fixed to the upper end of the tube '2 and extending into the slot (3 of the standard is a head 9. while pivotally attached to said head. is a rin; 10, through which the shank 3 extends. the'axis of the opening 11 through said ring being at an angle to the axis of the shank 3 and of greater diameter than said shank, whereby when the ring is resting in a horizontal position. the upper end of the opening will engagqthe shank. while the lower edge of the wall of the opening will engage the shanl; diametrically opposite the point of engagement as first described and at the lower cndof the opening. said ring exerting a binding action on said shank when the ring is resting in a horizontal position. said ring serving to hold the shank against casually descending when resting in a horizontal p sition.

In operating the device as a lifting jack. the head 4 is'positioned below an object and the shank raised until the head engages the object, the two rings, in view of the angle of the openings therctlu'ough. permitting the shank to freely move upwardly. As soon as the head is seated against an object, downward pressure is applied to the outer end of.
the lever 11, which would cause the ring '13, in view of the angle of the opening thercthrougln to engage the shank and move said shank upwardly; while the ring 10 will bind against the shank 3 as soon as pressure is released from the lever 11" and hold said shank against descending. In Figs. 5 and lwe have shown a slightly moditit-d form of lifting jat-k and have shown attat-hed thereto an "extension 15 the upper end of whit'h is provided with a hook t). the free end of which is adapted to enter a soeket :21 in the upper end of the shank 3. while the lower end of the extension is provided with a fork 2;. which rests againsttl1e tube '2 and holds the extension parallel with the tube. 'The objeet of providing the extension. is to enable the jaek to be used for raisin; objects from a point near the base of the jark. said extension having a toot pier-e 23 at its lower end. which is adapted to extend below and engage the object to he lifted. By arranging the ring 27 in this manner, the shank will be seenrelv held in its elevated position and when it is desired to lower the shank. the ring is lifted through the medium of a finger piece 30. the provision of the slot 2!) permitting the ring to be swung upwardly. This form of deviee may also be used for stretehing wire. ete. by providing the ehain attat-lnne-nt as shown in Fig. 1, the operation of the two forms of jaek being the same.
By this construction. it will be seen that we have provided a very cheap and durable form of lifting jaek and one that'ean be readily t-onverted into a wire streteher and it will further be. seen that by using the extensions. the jut-k may be employed for lift What we t-laim is: 1. ln a lifting jat'li. and stretcher, the

In a deviee of the eharaeter described, the eombination of a base, a standard and a tube rigidly seeured to and extending up wardly from said base, a shank in said tube, braving means between said standard and tube. a pair of rings encompassing said shank, one above the other and having inclined openings therein. one of said rings being pivotally seenred to said bracing means, an operating lever fulcrnmed on said standard. a link seenred at its upper end to the other of said rings and at its lower end to said lever and means on said shank for engaging and raising an object.
