Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED SLooUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caro, in the county of Tuscola and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Harness- Collar N eck-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to metallic harness collar neck pads and the improvement pertains to the construction of the reinforced upturned edge of the neck pad.

The objects are to provide a reinforcement for the upturned edges of the metallic pad, so arranged that the rivets, by which the reinforcing bands are held in place, will not gall the neck of the horse, and to provide a reinforcing band that will hold the leather straps in place without the use of fastenings that necessitate perforating the strap, the reinforcing bands being so arranged as to allow the strap to'lie close to the upper face of the metallic pad without bends or kinks, and to be readily removed therefrom.

The construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the pad, Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section on the line A, A of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line B,'B of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail of one of the loops in the reinforcing'band.

4, 4 formed by pressing up the metal of the band 3. Through each loop passes a leather strap 5. The straps slide freely through the loops 4 and the position of the loops relative to the curvature of the upturned ends 2 is such, see Figs. 2 and 3, that the lower part 5 of the strap will lie close to the top surface of the pad without being riveted to it.

The band 3 is fastened to the ends 2 by countersunk rivets 3 the outer faces of the upturned edges 2 being smooth.

It will be noted that the rivets 3 are so located that they cannot gall the neck of the horse.

By this construction I have provided a metallic harness collar neck pad having its upturned edges reinforced, and combining with the reinforcing means, a strap retainer that holds the strap in proper position without bending or buckling it, and also permitting the strap to slide and change position, thereby preventing excessive wear on the strap.

WVhat I claim as my invention and to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a metallic horse collar neck pad having upturned edges, a curved reinforcing band secured to each upper curved edge of the pad, and loops in said reinforcing bands to receive the strap of the pad.
