IMIROVMENI' IN MACHINE FOR WIRING- BLIND-SLATS, 8cc.

To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, PETER BARRY, of N ewark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Machine for Wirin g Blind- Slats and Rods; and Ido hereby dcclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which draw- Figure 1 represents a sectional front view of this invention.

This invention consists in the arra-ngemcut of two cut-off jaws, bearing on the staplcs from opposite sides', and provided with a rccess, in combination with the .feed-guide and the plunger, in such a manner that,
whenever the plnnger is raised above the cut-offjaws, the foremost staplc is permitted to drop into the re- Vccss of the cut-off jnws under the plung.er, and when the plnnger is depressed, said staple is carried down and driven into the slot or rod below, and'at the same time, by the action of the plunger, the cut-oifjaws are op'ened to allow the sta-pies to slide down on lthe feedguide, and to bring the succeeding staple in position to be carried. into the machine by the snbsequent stroke of the plunger.
The invention consists, further, in the arrangem'ent of a toothed segment gearing into a rack connected to the plunger, and also into a rack carrying the feedpawl for the rack used in wiring blind-rods, in combination with a hand-level' connected 'to the vplunger in such a manner that the motion of the hand-level' and plnnger is transmitted 'by a simple and eiicient mechanism 'to thefeed-pawl.

The Springs g, shown in the drawing, are simple piecesof India rnbber, but Springs of any other construction might he used.
The staplc which drops into lthe throat d' is retained therein by the friction-spring h (see fig. 3) until the plunger descends and drives it down into the sl-at or rod below.
By this arrangement the staples are fed to the throat I automatically and in single succession without fail, and
the operation of driving them into the blind-slats or rods can be performed with great rapidity.
Erom the headof the plunger D extends an L- .shaped arm, G, the edge of which forms a toothed rack, p, that gears into a segment, q, mounted on a pivot, r, which is secured in the frame O.
Said segmentv also gears into a sliding rack, H, which is supported by a lip or rail projecting from the frame O, and which is guided in a slot, s.
To this 'rack is attached the pawl t, which is intended to feed the rack carrying the blind-rods, into which the-wires orstaples are to be inserted. i
The amount of feed-motion produced by this pawl is adjusted by a screw, u, which permits said pawl to 1 catch int-o the teeth of the feed-rack'l sonner or iater, according to itsA position.
If said screw is turned back, the pawl t -produces a v greater feed than it` does if said screw is turned forward.
i When blind-slats are inserted into my machine, the
pawl tis thrown back, no feed-rack being required in this case. p
Having thusdescribed my invention,
'What I elaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rl`he eut-o'fi' jaws '8, provided with recesses in combination with the feedgude E and t-apering phmger D, substantially as set forth.
2. The Vertical rack p, secured to the slide c, which carries the plunger D, in combination with the segment q, and horizontal rack'H, carx'ying the paw] t, when the parts are combined and arranged to operate togeh'er, as described.
3. The arrangement of the jaws e, feed-guide E, tapen'ng plunger D, racks p H, segment q, feed-pawl t, and screw u, substantially as and for the purpose described.
