Description

ITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
THOMPSON NEVBURY, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPARATUS FOR FEEDING BLANKS TO SCREW-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,648, dated April 5, 1853.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, THOMPSON NEWBURY, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements for Feeding Screw-Blanks Into Theading-Machines and for other Purposes, the following being a full, clear, and exact account thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this description.
My improved feeding apparatus consists of a hopper (a) shown in plan and elevation in Figures 1 and 2. In the bottom of this hopper (a.) there is an oblong opening extending nearly its whole length and marked (b). This opening is surrounded by a flange forming a spout of the same figure as the opening, into which is fitted a slide or piston (c) constructed as follows: The form of the piston and its size correspends with the interior of the spout. On its lower end there is a small flange (0') to determine the distance it can be forced upward into the hopper. The piston or slide (c) is in two parts, ahorizontal division (d) running through it at a distance sufficiently below the top to admit the longest screw to be fed by it. This upper portion of the slide is jointed by one end to the lower part at (e) and at the opposite end there is a spring at-tached that holds it down to its place. There is a deep recess or slot (f) in its upper edge which is open at the jointed end. A bar (g) runs up through an opening in the center of the lower part of the slide and is jointed to the upper one near the center. By this bar the whole slide is worked up and down, as will presently appear, by being attached to any moving power affixed to the machine.
The operation is as follows: A sufficient number of screw blanks are put into the hopper and the slide is put in motion. It descends a little below the inclined sides of the hopper and the screw blanks fall upon it, a portion of them falling with their shanks down in the slot (f) above named in the top of the piston or slide, and thus becoming supported perpendicularly by their heads. The slide is then forced up by the bar or rod (g) till the flange (c) strikes the bottom of the spout lin which it works and by the continued motion of the rod or bar (g) the upper portion is canted on its hinge over toward a permanent spout or guide (7L) affixed to the side of the hopper, into which it deposits the blank by sliding it out of its recess or slot. As the rod (g) vagain descends the upper part of the slide is closed back to its place by the spring and then the whole slide descends together for a fresh supply from the hop per. By a continuous motion of these parts a suficient supply is insured to the threading or other machine. If there is not sufiioient jar in the machine itself to cause the screw blanks, screws or other article to be delivered sufliciently fast some well known device may be applied for that purpose.
Having thus fully described my new feeding apparatus what T claim therein as new, and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent is:
The slide substantially as herein described passing up through the bottom of the hopper in the manner set forth.
THOMPSON NEWBURY.
