WILLIAM B. STAMBAUGH, OF WOODSBORO, MARYLAND.
PORTABLE WIRE-FENCE POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1910.
Application filed March 27, 1908. Serial No. 423,631.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. STAM- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoodsboro, in the county of Frederick, State of Maryland, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Portable Wire-Fence Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to portable wirefence posts and has for its primary object to provide a post which is complete in itself, which may be readily transported from place to place and which may be set up without the use of tools except a crank handle for operating the fence wire and brace wire tightening devices.
Broadly stated, the post comprises a base, an upright fitted at its lower end into a socket in the base, brace wires connected at their lower ends to the ends of the base and at their upper ends to a tightening device of the Windlass type which is mounted at the upper end of the upright, and fence wire tightening devices of like nature fixed upon opposite sides of the upright.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown a detail perspective view of the fence post embodied in my invention.
As shown in the figure of the drawing, the post comprises a base 1 which is of oblong shape and is formed with a seat 2 for the reception of the lower end of an upright 3 which constitutes the post proper. This upright 3 is preferably rectangular in horizontal section and is braced with respect to the base 1 in the following manner. Brace wires 4 are engaged at one of their ends each around one end of the base 1 the extreme end portion of each wire being bent or twisted as at 5 around the main portion thereof so as to form practically a loop, the loop seating in notches 6 formed in the lower longitudinal edges of the base adjacent each end thereof. From their looped ends, the brace wires are extended upwardly and are engaged in notches 7 formed in the upper edges of those side faces of the post which are presented toward the ends of the base 1, and are engaged through an opening ,formed in a winding spool 8 which is rotatably mounted in a suitable bracket 9 fixed upon the upper end of the upright 3, the rotatable mounting of this spool being had by means of small trunnions 10 formed at the ends thereof and journaled in bearings in the side portions of the bracket 9. A ratchet 11 is fixed upon one of these trunnions outwardly of the corresponding side portion of the bracket and a pawl 12 is pivoted to the said portion of the bracket and rests by gravity normally in engagement with the ratchet, this end of the trunnion mentioned being squared for the connection of the ratchet therewith and also for the engagement therewith of a crank handle having a squared opening or socket (not shown) whereby the spool may be rotated to wind the brace wires thereon and in this manner draw them taut. It will be understood that these brace wires serve to prevent rocking of the post longitudinally of its base. Wire tightening devices 14: which are identical in construction with the devices just described and hence need not be specifically spoken of, are secured to the other side faces of the upright and it is to these devices that the line wires 15 of the fence are attached, it being understood that rotation of the winding spools of these latter devices will serve to t1ghten the line wires and also to brace the post against movement transversely of its base.
What is claimed, is
In a portable fence post, a base member arranged to extend laterally across the fence line, an upright having its lower end fixed centrally of said base member, brace wires each having an end fastened to a respective end of said base member, a tensioning device on top of said upright for said brace wires, and line wire tensioning devices of uniform construction with the first mentioned tensioning device and secured in spaced relation on opposite sides of said upright.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. STAMBAUGH.
