WINDOW-VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, James K. OMnAnA, a. citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and-useful. Improvements in Win- (low-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ventilators for use in Windows; and the object thereof is to provide an im roved window ventilator which is locate in the top of a sash, preferably the top sash of the window and which may be applied to any window sash by simply cutting out the top port1on of the glass and placing my improved ventilator in the sash as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of a window, the top sash of which is provided with my improvement, Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. 1, but showin only the top portion of a window and t e top portion of the upper sash and showing the method of open n and closing the ventilator, Fig. 3 a vertica section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 a vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and ;-Fig. 5 a horizontal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1, but showing only the sash with my improvement therein.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown an ordinary window frame comprising a side member a, a top member a and a bottom member a, and mounted in the frame is the usual top sash b and bottom sash 0 In the practice of my invention. and in applying the some to an old sash cut out the top portion of the loss 5 horizontally and at a predetermined distance from the top of the sash preferably six or eight. inches and secure in the sash over the glass 6 a horizontal bar a. The bar a, the top member b of the sash frame together with the top portions 31* of the sides of the sash form a ventilator frame in the top portion of the sash, and this frame is divided vertically and centrally by a post or member b which is placed therein as shown in Fig. 5 and as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This divides the ventilator frame into two arts (3 and d 111 one of which is placed a g ass 6 and in the other a screen f, and at the front of the glass e and screen 7 I secure in the ventilator frame a supplemental frame g which s U-shaped in cross section as clearly shown in Fig. 5 and preferably composed of sheet metal and in which is mounted a panel frame It in which is placed a glass h and the panel frame I2. is free to be moved back and forth across the top portion of the sash in the frame g so as to open or close the screen f as will be readily understood. It will also be understood that the screen f forms the ventilator, and the panel frame it maybe moved so as to entirely close said ventilator or so as to partially close the same or entirely open the same.
In the foregoing description I have described the method of applying my improvementto an old sash, but it will be understood that the same may be applied to a new sash by simply placing in the top part the transverse bar 0, and then placing in the space above said bar the other parts of my improvement as liereinbefore' described. It will also be apparent that the bottom sash may be provided with a similar ventilatin device if desired; and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. A window ventilatin device consisting of a bar placed transverse y in one end portion of a sash so as to form an oblong space which extends entirely across the same between the side frames thereof, a glass placed in one end portion of said space and a screen in the other end portion thereof, and a sliding panel frame provided with a glass and mounted in front of the first named glass and screen and between said bar and the corresponding end of the and movable transversely of the sash in front of said glass and screen.
2. A window ventilating device consisting of a bar placed transversely in one end portion of a sash so as to form an oblong space which extends entirely across the same between the side frames thereof, and is divided by a vertical post placed between said bar and the adjacent end of the sash, a glass placed in one end portion of said space and a screen in the outer end portion thereof, and a sliding panel frame provided with a glass and mounted in front of the first named glass and screen and between said bar and the corresponding end of the sash and movable transversely of the sash.
