CORNELIUS C. HASTINGS, F SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO MILTON BRADLEY COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIE D, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
' LOCKING DEVICE FOR LEGS OF TABLES.
963,439. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 5, 1910, Application filed February 5, 1910. Serial No. 542,232.
To all whom it may concern: tached to the leg, and with a portion of the Be it known that I, CORNELIUS O. HAS- cap element that confines the movement of 'riNos, a citizen of the United States of the locking bolt broken away. America, residing at Springfield, in the Referring to these drawings in detail, acounty of Hampden and State of Massadesignates the top portion of the table; I) chusetts, have invented new and useful Im One of the legs thereof; 0 a cleat element provcnlents in Locking Devices for Legs of suitably secured to the underside of the Tables, of which the following is a specificatable top. Secured to the bottom side of tion. the table-top a is an angle-shaped casing (Z The invention relates to lo king devi which is provided with an offset portion a for table-legs. whereby a space is provided between the This invention relates to locking devices offset portion and the table, as shown at 6 a structure that will effectually lock the leg in which space is located the locking bolt of the table either in its folded or open poor sliding element f which is provided with 15 sition, and one that is easy to operate and tWO locking lugs g and /L,the lug 9 being yet will not become displaced when in use. adapted to enter the groove 2' in the head Broadly the invention consists (1) in proportions of the casting 7' which is attached viding a sliding element having lugs thereto the leg I) by any suitable means, as the on that are adapted to engage a groove in screws k. The leg Z) of the table-top is at- 20 a, casting that is attached to the leg of the tached thereto by means of the hinges n, as
table, one of the lugs being adapted to enclearly illustrated in Fig. 5. The casting gage the groove when the leg is in an unis provided with a disk-shaped head portion folded position, and another lug to engage m in which the groove 1' is located. the same groove when the leg is folded; Integral with the slide f is an operating 5 and (2) in providing a latch for locking handle 0 which extends at right angles to the the slide against accidental displacement slide f and over the cleat portion 0, as indiwhen the leg is unfolded or in a vertical cated in Figs. 4: and 5. This handle is for or supporting position. the purpose of moving the slide so as to lock The invention will be fully set forth in the leg either in a folded or open position.
30 the specification and drawings forming a Pivotally mounted on the inner end porpart thereof, and particularly in the claims. tion of the handle element 0 is an L-shaped In the drawings,Figure 1 shows an end latch p having a notch q in one of the arms view of a table with the leg locked in the thereof, which latch engages the shoulder open or supporting position and the latch portion 1" of the opening d in the casing (Z 35 on the sliding bolt for retaining the slide in order that the slide f may not be acciagainst movement. Fig. 2 is a vertical, secdentally moved and thereby withdrawing tional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1 clearly the lug g from the groove 2' and unlocking indicating the locking lug on the bolt in the leg. The weighted portion of the latch engagement with the groove in the head 79, when the leg is in use, normally throws 40 portion of the casting that is attached to the notch 9 against the portion 9".
the leg. Fig. 3 shows a sectional view sim- As shown in Fig. 5, the leg is locked in ilar to that shown in Fig. 2 with the leg open position by means of the lug g engagin the folded position, and the groove in the ing the slot 2' of the head portion m of the casting engaged by the other lug on the casting j, and in order to unlock the leg so 45 sliding bolt. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view that the same may be folded, the operator of the table showing a portion of the leg in moves the handle element 0 in the direction section on the line 4--l of Fig. 1, looking of the arrow s, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in the direction of the arrow and indicatwhereby the lug g is moved out of engageing the position of the locking device with. ment with the slot 2'. When the slide 7 has 4 50 the leg in the open or unfolded position. been moved so that the head portion 11?. is in Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking the position between the lugs g and h, the device showing the leg in the open posileg may be folded, as shown in Fig. 3; then tion and the lug on the locking bolt in enby a further movement of the handle 0 in gagement with the groove in the casting atthe same direction, the lug 72, is brought into engagement with the slot 2' in the head portion m, thus locking the leg.
To open the leg it is only necessary to reverse the above described operations.
From the foregoing description, it Will be seen that I have produced a very simple and efiicient table-leg locking device and one that readily permits the leg to be locked securely in both an open and folded position.
What I claim, is
1. In a. locking device for table legs comprising a casing element adapted to be secured to the under side of the top of a table, a leg foldably attached to the table-top, a
-: casting having a head portion and secured thereto and provided With 'a groove in the head portion thereof, a slide mounted Within the casing element and having a pair of lugs, said lugs being arranged to enter the groove in the casting, whereby the leg may be locked in either the open or folded position.
2. In a locking device for table legs comprising a casin element adapted to be secured to the underside of the top of a table, a leg foldably attached to the table-top, a casting having a head portion and secured thereto, and provided with a groove in the head portion thereof, a slide mounted Within the casing element and having a pair of lugs, said lugs being arranged to enter the groove in the casting whereby the leg may be locked in either the open or folded position, means for operating the slide, and a latch for locking the slide.
