Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LEUCKERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved pressure-regulator for tanks containing acetylene or other gas under pressure used on automobiles and other vehicles, so that a uniform supply of gas can be supplied to the burners of automobile or other lamps, whatever be the pressure of the gas in the tank; and the invention consists of a pressure-regulator comprising a cylindrical casing, a supply-nozzle for the acetylene or other gas in said casing, a pendent plate provided with an elastic block for opening or closing said nozzle, an elastic diaphragm in said casing, means for connecting the pendent late with said diaphragm, and a valved dlscharge-nipple for said casing for delivering the gas at uniform pressure to the lamps.
The invention consists further of certain details of construction which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation, showing a tank containing acetylene or other gas under pressure with my improved pressure-regulator connected therewith, Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2, 2, Fig. 4, Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3, 3, Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 4, 4, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 0 represents the cylindrical casing of my improved pressureregulator, which casing is provided with detachable heads 0 c that-are screwed by their internally-threaded circumferential flanges on the casing. A rubber gasket 0 is interposed between the casing 0 and head 0 while a diaphragm d, of conveXo-concave shape and of rubber or other elastic material, is interposed between the casing c and the opposite head 0 The head 0 is provided with a central nipple 0 into which is screwed a rimmed hollow screw-plug 0 which has a small arc-orifice 0 so as to establish atmospheric pressure in the space between the diaphragm d and the head 0 Between the elastic diaphragm d and the screw-plug c is interposed a helical spring 8, the tension of which is regulated by turning the screw-plug 0 in inward or outward direction, according to the pressure at which the acetylene or other gas is to be delivered to the automobile or other lamps. The spring 8 is held in position at one end by the plug o and at the other end by means of a pin al which is attached to the center of the elastic diaphragm d and which extends into the helical spring 8, but without touching the spring 8, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The pin d is attached by washers 61", which are screwed on the shank of the pin, to the center of the diaphragm d, the inner end of the pin al being connected by pivot-links d with lugs e on the lower end of a pendent plate 6 which is hinged at its upper end to ears 6 on a cross-bar c that can be adjusted higher or lower by means of a setscrew 6 on a supply-pipe j which is screwed in the upper part of the casing c. The pipe f is connected by an interiorly threaded coupling-sleeve f with an eXteriorly-threaded nipple f on the outlet-pipe f of a tank t, which contains acetylene or other gas under pressure. The lower end of the supply-pipe f is provided with a bored-out laterally-extending nozzle 72. through which the gas escapes into the casing 0.
The orifice of the nozzle a is closed by a block Z) of soft rubber or other elastic material which is applied by its ends to slots in the pendent plate (2, the ends of said block being passed through said slots so as to be firmly held in position and conveniently removed and replaced from time to time. By adjusting the pendent plate 0 up or down on the supply-pipe f different points of the rubber block b may be brought to bear on the nozzle 71., thus prolonging the life of said block by distributing the wear thereon. The pendent plate e is preferably made of some light metal, such as aluminum, so as to move easily under the pressure of the gas escaping through the orifice of the nozzle n. The casing c is provided with a discharge-pipe 9 having a stopcock g and a threaded shank 9 which is screwed into a threaded hole of the casing c, as shown in Fig. 3. The discharge-pipe g is connected by a flexible pipe of the automobile or other vehicles:
