BIBBONFASTENER AND SALES-INDEX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 191@.
Application filed September 13, 1909. Serial N 0. 517,500.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. WOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon- Fasteners and Sales-Indexes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device that may be easily and quickly attached to the paper box or block within a bolt of ribbon, and on which the ribbon is wlound, and one that will hold the ribbon in ace. p The further object is to supply an index that will show the amount of ribbon that has been taken or cut off.
These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
Figure 1 is a view of the dial side of the device as attached to a block of ribbon. Fig. 2 is a view of the other side. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device on a block of ribbon. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line w w of Fig. 1.
My device consists of two side pieces and a U-shaped wire bail. The two disks 2 are similar in construction, except that one has a dial thereon, and they have a portion of their edges cut as points or pins 3, and bent at right angles thereto, to permit the device being secured on the ribbon block 1, by inserting said points 3, into the ends of the ribbon block. Each of said disks 2 has a central circular opening cut therein. Covering each of said central openings, and on the side of the disk opposite the points 3, is adjustably secured the disks 4; said disks 4 have their peripheries turned as a flange, a portion of each flange is extended as lugs, and are bent to engage the inner edge of said central opening in said disks 2, and to fasten said disks 4 thereon. In the flange of each of said disks 4, are out two holes, diametrically opposite in position, within said holes are inserted the legs of the U-shaped wire bail 7 which holds the ribbon in place. On the face of the side opposite the pins 3 of one of the disks 2 are formed in a circle concentric with said disk, Figs. 1 to 10, with marks indicating one-fourth, one-half and three-fourths of the distance between each figure in the form of a dial. Between the said disk 2 on which is the dial and its adjacent disk 4, is fitted the index disk 5, a portion of which disk 5 is extended, forming the index 6. This index disk 5 is adjustably held between the said disks 2 and 4 by the same fastenings that hold them together. This form of fastening permits each disk to have an independent rotation, but the same axis. For ribbon of diflerent widths, the horizontal part of the U-shaped wire bail 7 is made of diiferent lengths.
The device is used by attaching the disks to the ribbon block by inserting the pins 3, as indicated hereinbefore, then place the bail 7 in position by inserting the ends thereof within and through the holes provided in the flange of the disks 4; the horizontal part of said U-shaped bail 7 will hold the ribbon from becoming unwound when so desired, and the ends of said bail 7, when inserted in said holes, will hold the ribbon securely on the block. The ribbon may be unwound at any length by pulling out the end, the U-shaped bail 7 being pushed within or through the holes as the ribbon is unwound. The index 6 is then turned on the dial to indicate the amount of ribbon out 01%. The amount of ribbon on an ordinary bolt as put up by the factory being ten yards, the amount cut off being indicated by the index, the salesman has always the remaining yards of ribbon indicated for his information, as well as that of the invoice clerk.
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim as new:
1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a pair of disks having fastening means and central openings, a pair of disks adjustably secured over said central openings, each of said last named disks having two holes diametrically opposite in position in their flanges, and a U- shaped bail having its legs slidably fitted in said openings.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a ribbon block, of a pair of disks having means to secure the same to the opposite faces of the block, a pair of smaller disks co-axially connected to the first mentioned disks and rotatable around the axis thereof, a U-shaped bail having its legs slidably mounted in two holes diametrically opposite in the flanged edge of said last mentioned disks, an index rotatable around the axis aforesaid between one bolt diskand the smaller adjacent disk;
and a dial cooperating with said first mentioned disk and said index, for the purposes set forth.
3. In a device of the Character set forth,
the combination with a ribbon block, of a pair of disks having means to secure the same to the opposite faces of said block, and having central openings therein, a pair of smaller disks co axially connected to the first mentioned disks, and rotatable, around the axis thereof, an index adjustably secured betweeinone of the first and one of the latter DAVID H. WOODMAN.
