Description
FRANK H. SAWYER, 0F CASPER, WYOMING.
PAPER-FASTENE R.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1909.
Patented July 5, 1910. Serial No. 491,988.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. SAWYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Casper, county of Natrona, and State of WVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paper fasteners.
In many situations where files are used there is occasion to add papers from time to time to those which are already secured to the file jacket by a paper fastener. This is particularly true in docket files, files of railroad ofiices, attorneys file jackets, etc., and it is often found inconvenient, especially where quite a number of papers are held to the file jacket by the same fastener to attach additional papers or to remove some of the papers already fastened to detach a given paper and thereafter replace the uppermost papers which are not desired.
The object of the present invention is the provision of an attachment for the ordinary paper fastener which will enable the prongs or points of said fastener to be quickly and easily held together so that any of the papers attached to said fastener may be rapidly and easily removed or others placed thereon and the prongs of the ordinary fastener thereafter pressed down upon the papers.
The invention is carried out by the provision of a novel pointed and adjustable attachment which is carried by one of the prongs of the paper fastener and is adapted to be made to engage with the other prong thereof whenever desired to hold the prongs together, as will appear hereinafter.
The novel features are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure l is a. perspective of the invention in use; Fig. 2, a detail view thereof, the prongs of the fastener being spread; and Fig. 3, a detail of the invention detached from the paper fastener.
An ordinary pronged paper fastener is shown at 1 to which my attachment is applied. The attachment consists of a piece of metal 2 having a point 3 and a part 4 which slides on one of the prongs of the fastener 1 but is prevented from becoming detached by the bent end 5 of the paper fastener 1. The attachment has a loop 6 which when said attachment is slipped down on the prong of the paper fastener to which it is attached, receives and clamps the other prong 1 of said paper fastener and, on account of the provision of the point 3, the papers already held by said paper fastener 1 can be readily removed or, if they have been previously detached, they can be readily reattached, or other papers attached thereto at any time.
The present invention is susceptible of many variations of structure without departing from its spirit and scope, and I wish it understood that I consider the invention broadly comprehends the provision of means carried by one of the prongs of a paper fastener for holding said prongs together at any time it may become necessary to detach papers therefrom or attach papers thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a pronged paper fastener, of a movable pointed attachment non-detachably carried by one of said prongs of said paper fastener adaptedfor engaging the other prong thereof to hold the prongs together.
2. The combination with a pronged paper fastener, of a pointed slidable attachment non-detachably carried by one of said prongs of the paper fastener and which projects beyond the end thereof which is adapted to be slipped into or out of engagement with the other prong of said paper fastener.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK H. SAWYER.
