TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United ,States, resident of Anthony, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Tobacco-Pi es; and I declare the following to be a ll, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap ertains to make and use the invention, re erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pipe having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing another location for the ignition strip. Fig. 3 is a central lon itudinal section of the ignition strip as app lied. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the ignition strip. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of a modified form of ignition strip as applied. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of such modified form .of ignition strip.
The invention has relation to tobacco pipes, having for its object the provision of improved means in connection therewith for striking a light or igniting a match.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the pipe, of the ifiual character, and b, is a short narrow rectangular or oblong recess formed in the pipe bowl or stem, and having an inclined bottom wall I), which may be flush at one end 6 with the surface of the pipe. Lying within this recess is an ignition strip 0, of brass or other, suitable material, having right angle side flanges d, 03, running lengthwise, and rasp teeth 0, c. This ignition strip is preferably longer than the recess of the pipe m which it partly fits, the upper or rear portion of the strip projecting without said recess and lying on the Specification of Letters Patent.

surface of the pipe bowl or stem. In this way it is not required to cut into the pipe to any extent. The ignition strip is preferably secured in positlon by means of small screws f, f, engaging the perforations f, f. Thus the opening between the side flanges of the strip at its bottom or forward end is unobstructed, the outer surface of the strip at this end being flush with the surface of the pipe, whereby the match can readily be entered between such flanges, and will be held in proper guidance for ignition by the sharp rasp teeth of the strip.
It is not essential that the ignition strip be fitted within a lateral recess of the pipe, but the outer surface of the strip at one end thereof should be flush with the outer surface of the pipe, in order that the match may be readily entered against the teeth. Such form of the invention, is shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings, wherein the ignition strip is secured to the pipe by means of the end screws entirely, there being no recess in the pipe forthe reception-of the strip. In this form of the invention, the end or ends are beveled as shown at g, g, to render the surface of the strip at the end or ends flush with the surface of the pipe or merging into such pipe surface to facilitate the entrance of the match.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a tobacco pipe having therein a short recess, of a comparatively long longitudinally bent ignition strip fitting at one end portion thereof within said recess, with its outer surface at such end flush with the outer surface of the pipe, said ignition strip having longitudinal edge flanges.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
