Description

diluita-1I giedre HENRY BLAKE, or EINDGEAND Mos J, BLAKE, or EIT HAMPSHIRE gaat orpi,-
vLetters Patent N 96,301, dated November 2, 1869.
l IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINE POR SHAPViNG- WOODE 4llRvAYSal The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: land making part f the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownythat we, HENRiI BLAKE, of Rindge, in the county of Cheshire, and State of New Hampshire,
and AMOS J. BLAKE, of Fitzwilliam, in said county made to the' accompanying drawings'making a part of this specification- Figure 1 of which is a plan or top view of the machine, as it is arrangedfoi-eutting the inside of the trays.
Figure 2/is a side view.
Figure 3 is 'a front view of the same.
`Figure 4 is a top view of a supplementary table or carriage for shaping the outside ofthe trays.
Figure 5 is the end view ofthe same. y
The nature of our invention consists of an arrangement of mechanism for holding and presenting blocks or bolts of wood for the action of vrevolving cutters, in such a manner as to insure the shaping of a concave or convex form, such as may be desired; the said cuttersbeing made to traverse the blocks by suitable reciprocating or vibrator-y movements of the mechanism, guided by a model or pattern, to produce a properlyshaped tray, which will only require the application of a smoothing-tool to'ft it for sale or use.
To enable others skilled in the artigo use our in-l vention, w. will proceed to describe its ,construction and operation.
Like letters of reference refer `to likeparts of the machine., Y
The principal frame-work of the machine is represented by the letter A, in the drawings, and Bis a revolving shaft, suspended by said. frame, and 'provided with, pulleys for Y the driving-band, from any suitable motor, and for communicating motion to the cutters C G, which are attached to a swinging frame D, the position of which is governed by a tracing-wheel, E, as it rolls upon the model or pattern F, so as to produce a similar form from the' blocks acted upon by the cutters. l
G is a carriage, having a reciprocating motion from It is provided with supplementary tables or carriages R' and R, which are severally adapted for cutting the concave and convex sides of the trays, either being used for its specific purpose,.as may be de sired.
l On. the supplementary table or carriage. R", used4 'edge ofthe same.
' Ast-his result could Vnot be attainedby securing the blocks and model to the surface of a level table or carriage, it is an important auxiliary toour machine. f
To these supplementary .tables are secured, by means of suitable dogs or clamps, the tray-blocks or bolts I I, also the model or pattern E,A and in addi- Vtion to the transverse reciprocating motion of .the
carriage G, these supplementary tables or carriages BLR", sliding on the same, have also a movement in a ltmgitudinal direction, effected by means of aratchet-rack, Lrand pawl M, which are worked by cams or inclined planes, attached to frame A., so that the cutters are made to traverse the blocks I I, throughout their entire length, takinga new line of, out at each passage across the same, removing there-1 -from the surplus material, and -reducing them to correspond with the model.
Vis a cam, for liberating the -paivl'M from the ratchet L, thus detaching the tables B or R", which,` after suspending the motion of the crank H, may, by hand-crank N, rack S, and pinion T, he moved quickly in either direction, so that the cuttersrnay be made to traverse the blocks in the direction of their length, to remove. any ridges or inequalities which may have been left by their passage in the other direction', the movement from the crank H being temporarily suspended.-
This arrangement for -recu'tting at 'right angles ,to
'the previous cut, is very useful in smoothing the sur-l face of the work, and facilitating the whole operrtion.
O is an adjustable plate-o1' rest, for the tracingvwheel E, which is set to forni a continuation of the model to support and guide tle cutters properly, asl,
they pass oil' the blocks on either side.
P is an equivalent arrangement for the convex sides of the trays.
The operation of the machine is as follows, viz:
ylhe blocks to be cut are secured lin their places on the tables R or R", together with the model which it is desiredv to duplicate, so that the tracing-wheel yE will be at onevend of 4the same.. The 4crank H' is then put in'motion, and the carriage G passes' the blocks back and forth underneath the cutters, while the pawl and rackset the upper tables R'or R" ahead in another direction at each stroke of the said lower carriage G, until the entire surface of the blocks has been presented for the action of the cutters,
which cutters, guided by a purpendicular movement.
of the swinging frame D, from the tracingwheel and model, reproduce its form in the blocks I I.
The cutters C Gmay be made in form of circular saws or in the form of a plane-head Orptherwise, and
the movements of the reciprocating carria e G may be produced by different means than those escribed,
to effect the same object. f
-We make no claim to the use of a model or` pat'- 2. The arrangement of the adjustable table or rest tem for the guidance of cutters to produce a similar O, in combination with the carriage R', substantially form; but
c. i in the manner herein shown and described, and for Ne do claim as our invention, and desire to sethe purpose set forth.
@um by Letters Patent-- HENRY BLAKE,
1. Hanging the cutters C C, and tracing-wheel E, i p AMOS .J. BLAKE. a' sucient Vdistance below the swinging frame D, to allow a free passage of the carriages R' and R,.while XVitnesses: carrying the tray-blocks 'I I and model F underneath JOHN E. FISHER, 4 the sarne, substantially as herein shown and described, CHARLES A 00mn. and for the' purpose set forth.
