To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANCIS STEPHENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchell, in the county of Davison and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor- Scrapers, of which the following is a specificatlon.

My invention relates to a device for dress ing floors and more particularly to a device of that class known as floor scrapers.

The principal object of my invention comprehends the production of a device of this character whereby the same may be readily adjusted to be most conveniently handled by the operators, and also to enable the same to be taken apart or disassembled, if desired, so as to occupy only-a small space when not 1n use. I

Other objects of my invention will become apparent as the nature of the same is better understood from the following description and accompanying drawings.

In the drawings which illustrate the invention in its preferred form, and in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a front View thereof; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the telescopic sections of the handles of my floor scraper; and Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 indicates the scraper head which is circular in cross section and has its outer end flattened, as at 1 and extended downwardly in an inclined direction. A reversible scraper blade 2 is securely clamped against the outer face of the portion 1 by means of a plate 3 and thumb screw 4. As will be seen in Fig. l the stem of the thumb screw 4 passes through vertically arranged slots at and 6 formed in the plate3 and the flattened portion 1 respectively, and through a hole 2 formed in the scraper blade. By loosening the thumb screw 4 the position of the scraper blade 2 with respect to the scraper head may be readily adjusted and it also may be turned end for end in case either of the cutting edges of the blade become dull.

Fastened to the outer face of the plate 3, near its lower. end is a rubber knob or bumper 5, which serves to protect the base board of the room from being scarred when the scraper is being worked close to said base board.

Extending rearwardly from the scraper head 1 and at an angle of about sixty degrees is an adjustable handle 6 composed of a number of telescopic sections 7 of steel tubing or the like. of the lower section 7 is the inner end of the scraper head 1, which is securely clamped therein by a clamp 8, between the ears 8 i of which is pivotally connected the lower reduced end of a piece 10 the upper end of which is cupped and internally threaded for the reception of the lower end of the lower telescopic section 11 of the vertical handle 12. It will thus be seen that the said handle 12 will be allowed to swing as the scraper is moved over the surface of the floor.

As will be seen by referring to the drawings the telescopic sections of the handles are securely connected together by means of thumb screws 13 which work in longitudinal slots 14 in one side, and at the inner ends of all but the lower of the sections. These slots 14 terminate at their upper ends in squared openings 15, through which and" similar openings 16 the heads 13 of the thumb screws 13 are adapted to be passed. The said openings 16 are formed near the upper ends of the sections into which the ends of the sections'provided with the slots fit. Obviously by loosening the thumb screws 13 the handles 6 and 12 may be extended or contracted to suit the operators,

7 and also by withdrawing the thumb screws through the openings 15 and 16 the sections 'may be readily disconnected, and the machine stored or packed in a small place.

The outer end of the u per of the sections 7 of the handle 6 is sp lit and flattened, and bent to form a clamp, as at 17, through which is passed the handle bar 18, the same being securely held therein by a thumb screw 19.

F astened at a suitable point along the upper of the sections 11 of the handle 12 is a hand hold 20 which extends at right angles to said section 11 and is securely clamped thereto in a manner similar to that of clamping the handle bar 1 8 to the section 7 The scraper is adapted to be operated by two persons, one of whom draws the scraper toward him by the handle bar 18, while the Placed into the lower end other grasps the hand hold 20 in one hand and takes hold of the upper end of the handle 12 with the other, and exerts the proper pressure on the scra er blade and also guldes the same. At t e end of the forward stroke the person at the handle 12 lifts the scraper blade from the floor and the person at the handle 6 pushes it back to the beginning of the stroke, when the first mentioned person brings the scraper blade to the floor again and the last mentioned person draws the same toward him.

From the foregoin it will be seen that I provide an improve floor scraper which may be easily and rapidly manipulated and which will efi'ectually serve the purpose for which it is intended.

While the drawings illustrate the handles 6 and 12 as being formed of a number of telescopic sections, it will be understood that rigid one-piece handles may be used, if desired, and no limitation is implied by reason of the particular structure shown.

I claim:

in a floor scraper, the combination of a pair of operatln handles, each composed of a number of te escopic and removable sectlons, a scraper head comprising a shank let into the end of one of sald handles, and an angular flattened outer end, a scraping blade adjustably held upon said flattened end, and a band clamp surrounding the end of said handle to secure said shank, and having upstanding ears between which the inner end of the other operating handle is pivotally secured. a
