RECEPTACLE-COVER FASTENER.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY JAooBsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to locking` covers for barrels and other receptacles, and its object is to provide such a cover of simple construction which may be readily locked on the receptacle to close the same securely, and unlocked and removed therefrom as desired. This object is attained by, and my invention is embodied in, the device hereinafter described, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure l is a side view of the upper portion of a barrel equipped with my locking cover, and illustrating the locking means as the same in Eig. 2 would be viewed from a point below the bottom of E ig. 2; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover and its locking means; and F ig. 3 is a side view of the upper portion of a barrel and the locking means, certain parts being shown in vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The receptacle, as the barrel l, is provided with a keeper-bearing band 2, preferably of strap iron, securely fastened to the receptacle, as by its ends being turned downwardly, then passing under one or more hoops 3, and being riveted to a lower hoop 4. This band 2 carries a keeper 5, riveted thereto in the construction shown. A receptacle cover 6 adapted to fit and close the mouth of the receptacle is'provided with a hasp 7 adapted to engage the keeper, by sliding (when the cover is placed in position) under the keeper.

passes through alined openings 10 in the hasp 7 and its keeper 5. By forming the free end of the hasp 7, or the band or the keeper carried thereby, of suitable spring` material, the cover is tightly pressed on the receptacle to closely cover its mouth.
It is manifest that my device may be applied to receptacles of other shapes besides the round barrel shown.
Not confining myself to the details of construction shown and described further than as set forth in the claims, I claim:
l. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a keeper borne by a band fastened to the receptacle and extending from side to side of its mouth, and a detachable cover for the receptacle carrying a hasp adapted to be locked to the keeper.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a keeper borne by a band fastened to the receptacle and extending from side to side of its mouth, and a detachable cover for the receptacle carrying a hasp adapted to yieldingly engage the keeper to press the cover tightly on the receptacle.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a barrel, of a keeper borne by a band fastened to a hoop of the barrel and passing under another hoop thereof and extending from side to side of the open head of the barrel, and a detachable cover for the barrel having a hasp adapted to be locked to the keeper.
