SHOUT-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1111 28, 1910.
Application filed July 24, 1909. Serial No. 509,328.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ORVIL J. MAnsi-i and lumen F. l-lniss, citizens of the United States. residing at Alliance, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a show case and particularly to a construction thereof adapted to be combined with a counter.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of means for withdrawing a box or package from a show case and opening the cover thereof automatically during such action.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective of the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the shelf; Fig. 4; is a detail vertical I section through the shelves and easing therefor; Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section of the shelf slide, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of the spring for the box cover.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The numeral 10 designates the casing which may be of any desired construction and provided at its upper portion with the counter 11. This casing is also formed with a series of open partitions 12 to separate it into independent compartments each of which is provided with a side board 13 hav: ing a groove 1% therein which is enlarged laterally at the outer end thereof as shown at 15 and there provided with a seat 16 adapted to contact with the ends 27 of a cross bar 17 carried by the slide or tray 18 mounted in said groove. This seat 16 is disposed at an angle to the base of the groove 1% so that the shelf 18 when extended is supported in an inclined position with its upper face in contact with the seat 16 and at its under side in contact with the cross bar 19 of the casing. The outward movement of the shelf is limited by contact of the end lugs 27 with the side strips 25.
The receptacle 20, which may be adapted to receive crackers or other merchandise is provided with a lid 21 hinged thereto and is mounted upon the shelf 18 so that the seam or outer edge 22 thereof will seat in a recess 23 disposed in the rib 2% carried by the shelf 18. This shelf is provided at its inner end with the cross-bar 17 to which a spring 26 is secured and this spring bears against the rear of the box so as to secure it against vertical movement upon the slide by which it is carried.
For the purpose of automatically raising the cover of the receptacle 20 as it is drawn outward a bar 30 is provided which is preferably formed of spring material and has at one end a hooked portion 31 adapted to engage the cover of the receptacle while the inner end of the bar is formed with a curved portion mounted to engage a pin or staple 33 upon the casing to limit its outward movement and lift the lid as the receptacle is withdrawn and drops into an inclined position as shown in Fig. 1.
1n the operation of the invention when the shelf carrying the receptacle is drawn outward its movement is limited by contact with the casing at the front and the downward movement of the shelf begins at the enlarged portion of the guide groove and continues until the lugs rest upon the inclined seat at the front of the groove and thus support the shelf against movement until again raised into a horizontal position. During this downward movement the rod connected with the cover of the receptacle has engaged the pin and autoi'natically lifted and opened the cover. hen the slide is returned to its inward position to dispose the receptacle within the casing the rod slides inward therewith as shown at the lower portion of Fig. 2. The invention thus provides an improved construction of store counter, having a show case at the front thereof adapted to inclose receptacles which are automatically opened when they are withdrawn and may be inspected when within the casing. The lower series of these receptacles may be disposed at an angle to the upper series for the purpose of.properly displaying the goods therein, and the receptacles may be arranged at each side of the counter if so desired. The invention therefore provides a simple, efficient and economically constructed device by which the receptacle disposed in the show case can be automatically opened as withdrawn therefrom and automatically closed in the return movement of the receptacle into the casing.
Having described the invention and set forth its merits what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. In a show case, a casing, a sliding shelf mounted therein, a receptacle carried by said shelf and having a pivoted cover, a lifting bar provided at one end with a portion to engage the free edge of said cover and with a free hooked inner end, and a staple mounted upon said casing to slidingly contact with said hooked inner end when the shelf is withdrawn.
2. In a show case, a casing having guide grooves upon its opposite side walls, a shelf mounted therein and provided with projections to enter said grooves, a recessed crossbar at the front of said shelf, and a tension spring at the rear of the shelf disposed to hold a receptacle in contact with said crossbar.
3. In a show case, a casing having its side walls provided with guide grooves enlarged at their outer ends and formed with a supporting seat at an angle to the lower wall thereof, a shelf provided with a cross-bar at its rear having projections disposed. in said grooves, a receptacle having a pivoted cover and disposed upon said shelf, and a connecting bar engaging said cover and a fixed member upon said casing.
4:. In a show case, a casing having its side walls provided with guide groovesenlarged at their outer ends and formed with a supporting seat at an angle to the lower wall thereof, a shelf provided with a cross-bar at its rear having projections disposed in said grooves, a receptacle having a pivoted cover and disposed upon said shelf, a connecting bar engaging said cover and a fixed member upon said casing, and means upon said shelf to prevent a vertical movement of the receptacle thereon.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
