ALFRED COLERI'CK PILLINER ANDJJAMES CHARLES HILL, OF 'l-HE OAK' FIELD WORKS, NEAR NEWPORT, ENGLAND.
Letters Patent No. 96,262, dated October 26, 1,869; patented 'in England, January 28, V1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-ENGIIIN'IERY' FOR MOTIvi-POWER.
The Schedule referred to ln these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
chinery for Obtaining Motive-Power, applicable also to measuring, raising, exhausting, forcing, and compressing tlniils, and we, the said ALFRED GOLEnIoK PIL- LINER and J Aiuns CHARLES HILL, do hereby declare the nature of the said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement therof; that is to say- This invention has for its object improvements in machinery for obtainingl motive-power, applicable also to `nieasuriug, raising, exhausting, forcing, and com pressing tinids. A The-apparatus consists of a casing in the form of two parallel cylinders placed side by side, and opening, the one into the other, and enclosed `by covers at the ends. At the point of contact of the two cylinders is a fixed roller, orvother fulcrum, on which a partition is able both to rock and reciprocate or slide. This partition is of a peculiar form. It has at each end a cylindrical, or nearly cylindrical head, anda stem connects them. Passing through the end cover of one of the cylinders is au axisivith Va crank-arm upon it,
carrying a crank-pin, which is embraced by a bearing in one i' the cylindrical heads of the partit-ion, and concentric with it. The radius ofthe crank-arm added to the radins ci' the cylindrical head should, together, equal the radius of the cylindrical casing in which they work, so that the cylindrical head ot'` the partition will always be in contact with the casing on t-he side toward which the crank is standing, and as the crank travels round, this lille oi' contact will also travel round within the casing.v Radial packing-strips, fur-.
nished with springs or'other packings, are iitted into the cylindrical head, so that the steam or lfluid may not be able to pass the line 'ofcontact j The covers at either end ot' the casing lit closely to the" doublelieaded rocking partition. llhe head atthe end of the rocking partition opposite' to the crank, or on the other side ofthe fulcrum, iu a similar way, is always in contact with the casing, and thc line of contact travels round within it i'n a similar manner. It w'ill, however, be found that either the head of the partition or the casing will require to diter somewhat from the cylindrical form. The' inlet and outlet-passages are vthrilled in the casing at the junctions of the two cylinders, and on opposite sides ofthe rockiugpartit-iou, or in one or both covers. The partition thus constantly divides thecasing into two parts, in one of .which is the iu- .let, `and in the other the outlet, so that as the fluid cannot pass from one tothe other without the partition being moved, the fluid, if under pressure, vgives this motion to the partition, and so drives the crank axis; or if the axis be driven, the apparatus will draw fluid in at one passage and expel it by the other.
Figure 1 'is a vertical section,
Figure 2 is a horizontal section, and
Figure 3 is a front view of the apparatus arranged as for a water-meter, but its form will be substantially the same, whatever the purpose for which it is employed.
a a is the casing of the apparatus. It has an inletpassage at al, and an outlet-at a2.
b isa bolt passing through the casing from side toside, and having upon it the roller or cylinder b1, which serves as the fulcrum for the double-headed partition c into a slot, c, in which the fulcrum is received.
c2 is a socket or bearing formed within one of the heads of the partition c, and in the centre'of this headit'receives the crank-piu d, carried by au arm, di, on the axis di, which passesout through the front'ot' the casing, in the centre oi one of the cylinders of which it is composed. l y
c? c3 are packing-strips of metal. They are fitted ina to radial grooves inthe heads ot'-the'partition, in such A' manner that they can move out and ina short distance,
after the dash-plate f has broken the force ot' thel stream., It passes through the lilter-plate g, and so to the vin,let-.aperture al.
his a passage, by which any mud which mayac- ,cumulate is blown out from time to time.
Whcnjthe machine is not required to work with water, but with steam, air, or other fluid, the parts y and hinay be dispensed with.
Ou the axis'dz, when the apparatus isused as a meter, twoI metal disks are mounted, having an Indiarubber ring between them, which bears on the surface ofthe face-plate t', on au axis, t", carrying a worm giving motion to a train of counting-wheels.
The India-rubber ring is compressible by means of a screw-nut, and thus the speed `of the registeringtrain can be slightly varied suiiiciently for the purposes of accurate adjustment. WhereA the apparatus is required to be actuated by Huid under pressure and to drive machinery, the counting-gear is not required, and driving-pulleys, spur-wheels, or similar instruments, are mounted on the 'axis d2, to tr'ausmit the power from it to the machinery to be driven.
It is not essential that the two cylinders of the casing should be of the same size. 1t is sometimes advantageous to make that in which the crank works larger than the other. y
rlhe apparatus may be varied by applying a crank to each head of the partition, and connecting them so thatthey may revolve in opposite directions, either' by toothed wheels or otherwise, and dispensing wit-l1 the fulcrum.
-The inlet-passage may be arranged to pass through the stem of the rocking partition, and, where the apparatus is worked by steam under pressure, expansion-valves may be applied, or the partition itself maym form its own cut-oit'. y I Figures 4 and 5, on sheet 2 of the drawings hereunto annexed, show an apparatus for obtaining moti vepower, iu which the inlet-passage is formed through the stern of the partition, and also in which the steam is cut olf at halt' stroke, or thereabout, the partition itself forming the cut-o` valve. In these figures the same'letters of rc ference are used to indicate like parts to those shown on sheet 1, so that it is unnecessary again to describe them. The slot or hollow chamber c of the stem c is kept y full ofi-,steam hysteam passing in through the inletpassage al, and the steam passes from this chamber alternately through the two passages a into the two cylinders of which the casing a is composed. 4 lVhen the parts are, in the position shown at fig. 4, steam' is actingA expansively in the larger cylinder, whilst the full pressure ot' steam is acting in the smaller cylinder 4 As soon, however, as the crank-pin comes in a line with the central roller b1, the stern c has been brought into such a positionA that steam will be cut oli' from the smaller cylinder, and immediately afterward steam will be admitted into the larger cylinder. Subsequently, at the completion of another half stroke, steam will similarly bereut ofi' `from this cylinder, iand so on continuously'. y y
Having thus described the modes in which we have contemplated the application of' the principle of our invention, we declare that we are aware, that previous to our in vent-ion, rotary engines and rotary pumps had been constructed with a casing similar to ours, and with two revolving pistons, revolving in the cavity of the vcasing and combined together. We are also aware that the pistons have been constructed to revolve eo centric-ally in the cavityof the casing.
We do not wish to be understood as claiming to have invented such previous constructions; but
' What we claim as our invention, and desire to se-V cure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of -the casing with the doubleheaded rocking partition constructed with fixed'heads, thew hole constructed to operate substantially as before set forth.
Also, the combination of the casing, the doubleheaded rocking partition. the cran k-pin, the crank-arm, and the crank-axis, passrng through the frontof the casing, the whole constructed to operate substantially as betore set fort-h.
Also, the combination of the casing, the doubleheaded rocking partition, the filter-plate, and the dashplate, the whole constructed vto operate substantially
