Application filed August 28, 1807. Serial No. 890,432.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tnnoooas Soo'rr Ricnnnson', a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow- Seats, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that class of devices known as window seats and particularly to that class of portable seats or the like, adapted to be used on the outside of windows while cleaning the same.
It has for its objects the iroduction of a fe, convenient, simple am etlicient device 0 the kind described.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings wherein like reference charactlers indicate like or correspimling parts, *i ure 1 is a .rspective view 0 my preferred form of Fig. 2 is a top elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 4 is a cross secon line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. ti is a perspective view of my preferred form of clamping member. Fig. 7 is a top elevation of u modified arrangement of the clamping member and cooperating part on the back of the seat. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken substantiall on line 8-8 of Fig. 7. Fig. l) is a view in elevation (seating removed) showing a moditied arrangement for adjusting the sill engaging members relatively to the device 'and Fig. 10 is a perspective Vlt'W of a modified form of sill engaging member.
Referrin r to the drawings in which my referred l drm of device is shown, I is what.
shall hereafter term the seat member, and 2, the back therefor, pivotally secured to the seat in any suitable or desired manner prcf erably so that it will fold thereon. in the form shown, the parts are pivotally secured together by pins 3 or their equivalents for the pur iose, hinge lugs (i being provided on the hue member 2 arranged to cooperate. with lugs 5 on the scat. member 1. As shown, the hinge nmmbers or the lugs are arranged so that they will engage with the seat member 1 and the hack member 2 at points 7 and 7' respectively and form stops for'the back member 2 when open and in' operative position. Bracing members 8, 8' or their equivalents may be employed on one or both sides of the device or at some other convenient. place if desired. In the preferred .form they are constructed so as to prevent the back member 2 from accidentally folding down when in use, us well as to assist in supportin r the back when open.
\Vhile in the preferred form of device shown, the frames of the seat and back memhers I and 2 are made of metal and a suitable seating 18 provided thereon, it is obvious that any suitable material may be used for thepu Referring to Fig. 1 in which the preferred form of device is shown in operative ition in a window, S is the inner sill o the window and S is the outer sill or window ledge. 0n the seat member 1, are arranged one or more sill en ing member: 1010 which'are preferab y bent downward and back as at 11 and 12 to suitably en ge th inner ed e of the sill 8. These Bilf englgiflg mem .rs 10-10 or their equivalents for the purpose are preferably made adjustable on t e seat member 1 no that the device may be adjusted to any width or style of window sill. As is most clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the enga ing members 10-10 are suitabl seated and retained in depressions in the rout of the frame of the seat member 1 and the cross bar 9. thumb screws 13 or their equivalents for the purpose being employed to secure them in the desired operative ud j ustment. J lurality of depressions 13 may be arrange in the members 10 as shown, in which the ends of the thumb screws mav sent to give a more secure adjustment.
supporting member 14 is preferably provided on the under side of the scat memrcr as shown, to support the outer end of the scat mmnber on the outside sill or ledge S on the outer side of the sill S. This supporting member may be made adjustable on the frame if desired, screws 15 and a plurulity of holes 16 or their equivalents being plrovided to udjustnbly secure the same in p ace.
Any suitable means may be employed to clamp or secure the device in operative position. As is shown, a sill clumping member 19 is arranged on the seat member 1 and provided with a head 20 arran to butt against the outer edge .of the sill S. In the preferred form, the clamping membar is axiandsd as at 19 and ormngod in opsmtively coopersbs with the oxtonsion 21 on the buck member 2 when the same is opened so that opening the back mgmber 2, 20mm the clam m5; member '19 against the outer ad of t a window Bill S, and retain it in tha position. If desired any suitable means me. be employed to normally koep the clamping member 19 out of opegative poeikion when the back is foidod. As is most oiearly shown in Fig. 2, a depression 22 is arranged on the bar 9 of the seat member 1 and a resilient member 22 iaced tlior ain adapted to cooperate with 9. mg 23 on @210 underside'of the clam ing member 19 and thus normally keep tl e and of the clampi member 19 slgoimc Hie stop 32 on the cross or 9.
Referring to Figs. 7- and 8, u modified urmngomont of tho clamping member 19 is renown. In this form the pend 19 of tho member 19 is provided with a Biol; 24: and arranged to omm'zivoly coiipemba with o .in 25 on the axtemiion 21 of the back member 9. An in obvious, as the buck member 2 is folded upon the seat member 1, the clamping member 19 and the and 20 thereof will in withdrawn from the sill S, and vice versa, (aim end 20 will be forced reminod ugminst ilio Bill to clamp or lock tbs dovioo in operativo Fosition when "die book is opened. It wi 1 thus be seen tnatin either those fomxs, the back member 2 preferably coiip amtm with the clamping member M) to secure tho dovioo in onerativ position for use on a window or the ike.
As before smiled any suitable means may omployc l for udjumubly {securing the ongaging memlwm 10, to the soot member 1 if Hie same is so desired. in the modified form shown in Fig. 9, one odwa of the membem 10 is pmvidod with teeth 26 arranged to col ogiumle with lentil on the member 27 which in pivomlly snoumd at. point 28 tojbo'choes bur 9. The; mmnbur 27! is xizlainod in engagemom with Mao engaging; members 1b by H'b dilllfl of a cum member 29 pivomlly Basswood b0 ibe crow member 2) and operabed by the lav-122' 1-31 or its oouivalonfi for the iii-pose.
if donirod, thin mozmi' oliilm J or limit equivalents may be urrmimul as shown to gn'otcc'a Um Hunting iii'WlliCll is; arranged on biio six-mt mumbui' l and the back. 2 from any warmlimb might pmmibly be oocusionod by his sliding; buck and forth of ilao clamping izionilmr l!) o: the engaging members 10 in Hair mljHHiJiHiii.
Figs. 30 HiwWH u. wligghlly modif'iod nrmmgomom, of Elm clumping iimnl'wr in that UK: book is limit in n manna? iiml will mnku it mlnphililo for vnri'ous Mylonoi' Hlilfi S, that E Lima (iil'fifliilfiil of {he uxlomlcd purl. ll iii 1 nimesgw? iii ii.
i l. should be imiml S533 mmioxiu that in my fom of dovica nbown, backward movement of atlas membm 2- beyond its operative opsn position, is i i-o vented by means of amps I-? (or stop hinges) by the brace members 8, 8 and by tho sxtension 21 contacting with the clamping member 19 giving a very stroni, rigid and safe construction. Additional racing and strenmbonin of the various parts may be made; deoi Having bbus dot-scribed. my invention, it obvious tbmg, various immat/ai'isl tions may be made in tho form, desi and construction Within tho soope of e an pended ciuixml Wiiihout: deportin horn tbe spirit of my invention, hence I o not to be und as limiiing'myr/a i to (tho exaofi form and construction ahown.
What I claim as new and desire to secure; by Lotions mom is,
