To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Base-Ball Gloves, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to base ball gloves, and pertains more particularly to the arrangement and structure of the padding for same and to the means for separably assembling and uniting the inner and outer parts of the glove.

The object of my invention is to produce a base ball finger glove comprising an outer cover and an inner lining nesting therein, between the palm portions of which the padding materials may be carried, adapted to be separably united at the adjacent edges of the wrist and back portions, where by the lining may be removed from the glove, and access had to the interior thereof for adjustment and repair.

A further object thereof is to provide a pad for such gloves comprising a blank of flexible fabric conforming to the shape of the glove upon which is suitably built and secured the padding material of preferred thickness and location, adapted to be nested between the palm faces of the glove and its lining, said blank being fastened at its finger ends to the finger ends of the lining, and separably laced at its wrist end to the cover and lining of the glove, and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient glove of said character than has heretofore been accomplished.

To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the back of my glove; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the outer cover removed, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pad for same, and Fig. 4c is a longitudinal sectional view of my glove with the parts assembled.

therein, each of which is provided with a row of eyelets upon the adjacent edges of the wrist and cut-out portion of the back adapted to be laced together, a padding carried between the palm portions thereof, comprising a blank of flexible fabric conforming to the shape of said glove and cover, upon which is built and secured a padding of suitable material such as felt, said blank being provided with a row of eyelets adjacent to the outer edge of the wrist arranged to register with the eyelets on the cover and lining thereof, and adapted to be laced therewith by a cord.

Having reference to the drawings, 1 indicates the outer form of a base ball glove having the finger portions 2 and the thumb-stall 3, the palm and finger portions of which are preferably made of an integral piece of flexible leather or skin, and the back being made in longitudinal sections 4 embracing the back and sides of the fingers and being united by stitching to form the back 5. As illustrated in the drawings, the back and wrist portions may be cut-out at 6 to allow more freedom of motion to the hand. Adjacent to the edge of the wrist and back portions, I provide a row of eyelets 7 adapted to register and lace with similar eyelets provided on the lining and pad blank carried in the glove as hereinafter described.

The lining 8 is constructed of similar pattern to the outer form 1, of slightly smaller size and may be of soft flexible leather, suitable flexible woven fabric, or of absorbent felt, as preferred, and is adapted to nest within the outer form 1. As hereinbefore stated, said lining is provided with a row of eyelets 9 adjacent to the free edges of the wrist and back portions, by which it may be separably secured within said outer form.

As heretofore constructed, the padding material for gloves of this character has been inserted between the face and lining of the glove, and either loosely carried therein or fastened to either the face or lining thereof, and irremovably secured therein by stitching together the outer free edges of the outer form and lining. Such construction is objectionable in use, because the padding materials have a tendency to shift their position, and break or wad, and by reason of the closed structure of the glove, access cannot be had thereto for repairs or alterations. For the purpose of'obviating such deficiency, I provide a pad which comprises a blank 11 preferably of flexible fabric such as'duck or animal skin, and shaped to conform to the outer contour of the front face of the glove 1, which, as shown, is provided with a row of eyelets 12 adjacent to the edge of the wrist portion, and registering with similar eyelets on the outer form and lining before described; Upon the face therein through the eyelets secured on each of such members by the cord 15. It will thus be apparent that the pad and padding materials may be conveniently reached to modify or repair the same, and that the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof may be varied within a wide range without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

In a base ball glove, the combination with a flexible outer form and lining nesting therein, each of which having a row of eyelets adjacent to the outer free edges of the wrist and back portion, of a blank offlexible fabric conforming to the outer contour of said outer form and lining interposed between the face of same, and stitched at the ends of the finger portions to the tips of the finger stalls of the lining, lacing eyelets adjacent to the free edge of the wrist portion of said blank, flexible padding material conforming to the shape of said blank secured upon the face thereof inside the line of said eyelets, and a lacing cord adapted to separably lace said outer form andlining and blank together at their rear edges, whereby the flexible blank and padding structure are separably held extended over the face of the glove, substantially as described.
