ATTOR/VEV8 EDGAR W. HELLER, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
FILTER-PRESS.
Application filed February 11, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR W. HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filter-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the filter press, a portion of the operating mechanism being shown in vertical sectional view; Fig. 2 a plan view of the apparatus; and Fig. 3 a front elevation of the shifting head showing the hydraulic press mounted thereon.
Heretofore ordinary jack screws have been used to force the filter plates together and to hold them against the pressure of the liquid pumped in between them. This form of press, while simple in construction and readily and quickly operable, is unsatisfactory in that it is difficult and very laborious to secure the proper pressure on the filter plates. In the hydraulic filter presses wherein a hydraulic ram is used to force the filter plates together the construction is complicated, and the operation is slow and tedious, particularly the operation of releasing and withdrawing the ram to permit of the separation of the plates and the shifting head.
It is one of the main objects of this invention to combine the jack screw system with the hydraulic system to secure the advantages of both systems. By my invention I secure a rapid adjustment of the shifting head and filter plates by means of a jack screw and an adequate pressure on the plates by means of a hydraulic ram.
Another object of the invention is to so arrange the hydraulic compression apparatus that it will not interfere with the operation of the jack screw for the purpose of adjusting the shifting head to the filter plates.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Referring to the various parts by numerals, 1 designates the filter plates; 2 the rear support or stationary compression plate; 3 the shifting head; 4 the horizontal supporting bars on which the filter plates and the Specification of Letters Patent.

shifting head are mounted. These bars connect together the stationary compression plate and the compression head 5. 6 designates suitable supports for the stationary compression plate 2 and the compression head 5. These parts of the apparatus may be of any desirable form, that shown in the drawings being merely by way of illustration.
Extending horizontally and longitudinally through the compression head is a jack screw 7 which at its outer end carries the large hand wheel 8. This jack screw is threaded through a stationary nut 9 mounted in the compression head in the usual, or any other suitable manner.
Secured to the shifting head is a horizontal transverse track 10. Mounted to travel on this track is a depending supporting bracket 11 which is provided with track wheels 12 which engage the upper edge of the track and on which the supporting bracket may be moved back and forth across the face of the shifting head. Carried by the bracket is a horizontal hydraulic ram 13 whose rear closed end is adapted to be brought to the center of the shifting plate and in axial alinement with the jack screw. The ram plunger lt is adapted to move rearwardly out of the ram cylinder and to be engaged by the end of the jack screw. The bracket 11 also carries a hydraulic pump 15 which is connected by suitable pipes to the ram cylinder and is provided with an operating lever 16. It will, of course, be understood that this pump may be of any desired form and is illustrated by the drawing diagrammatically. The pump as shown is supported on the bottom of the ram cylinder, but it will, of course, be understood that it may be supported in any suitable manner from the bracket, or if desired it may be mounted on the stationary support and connected to the ram cylinder by any suitable form of flexible connection. The ram is mounted on the movable bracket or carriage in order that it may be moved to and from the center of the shifting head to bring it into and out of axial alinement with the 'ack screw. The jack screw serves as a movable abutment for the ram piston or plunger and the ram and its plunger serves as a spacing means between the shifting head and the jack screw when the said head and the filter plates are being quickly adjusted by the jack screw.
The operation of my improved press may be briefly described as follows z-VVhen the plates are properly adjusted the ram is moved on its carriage to bring the cylinder to the center of the shifting head and into axial alinement with the jack screw. The jack screw is then operated by means of the large hand wheel to quickly bring the shifting head and the filter plates into close contact and so that the jack screw by bearing against the ram plunger will form an abutment against which said piston will bear when pressure is applied thereto. The pressure fluid is then pumped into the ram cylinder to secure the final pressure on the filter plates.
It will be readily seen that the jack screw serves the double purpose of a movable abutment against which the ram will operate and also as a means for quickly bringing the parts of the filter press into engagement. It will also be noted that the ram serves the double purpose of exerting the final pressure on the filter plates and also as a bearing block against which the jack screw bears during the preliminary adjustment of the filter plates. i
It will be readily understood that other forms of movable abutments may be provided against which the rams may operate and that the ram may be of any desired form.
When it is desired to open the press the pressure from the ram cylinder is exhausted and the jack screw retracted sufficiently to release the ram. The ram may then be moved laterally on its track out of line with the jack screw. The shifting head and filter plates are then free to be moved on their supporting bars. It will be readily seen that there-need be a very slight movement of the jack screw both in'bringing the plates of the press together and in freeing them so that they may be separated.
From the foregoing it is manifest that I provide a simple and efficient means for securing the desired pressure on the shifting head and the filter plates which combines the advantages of the old jack screw type of press and the hydraulic type, and eliminates the disadvantages of both of said types of presses.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent is q 1. A filter press comprising a shifting head, filter plates a jack screw for rapidly adjusting the shifting head to the plates, a laterally movable pressure device arranged between the jack screw and the shifting head for applying final pressure to said head, said pressure device being adapted to be brought into and out of alinement with the jack screw and consisting of a part longitudinally movable independently of the jack screw and a part adapted to engage the shifting head.
2. A filter press comprising a shifting head, filter plates, a longitudinally movable abutment for rapidly adjusting the shifting head to the plates, a laterally movable pressure device arranged between the movable abutment and the shifting head for applying final pressure to the shifting head, said pressure device being adapted to be brought into and out of alinement with the abutmentand consisting of a part longitudinally movable independently of the abutment and a part adapted to engage the shifting head.
3. A filter press comprising filter shifting head, a movable abutment, a pressure device carried by the shifting head and between said head and the movable abutment and adapted to apply final pressure to the shifting head, the abutment being movable longitudinally independently of the pressure device.
4. A filter press comprising a shifting head, filter plates, a movable abutment and a laterally movable pressure device carried by the shifting head and adapted to be brought between the movable abutment and said head for applying final pressure to the shifting head.
5. A filter press comprising a shifting head, filter plates, a jack screw for rapidly adjusting the shifting head, a pressure device carried by the shifting head and movable thereon to adapt it to be brought between the jack screw and the shifting head to apply final pressure to the shifting head.

7. A filter press comprising a shifting head, filter plates, a jack screw, a laterally movable hydraulic ram carried by the shifting head and adapted to be brought into and out of alinement with the jack screw.
8. A press comprising a shifting head, a jack screw for rapidly adjusting said head, a pressure device arranged between the jack screw and the head for applying final pressure to said head, the jack screw being movable longitudinally independently of the plates, a
and means for independpressure device,
the ack screw and the ently supporting pressure devlce.
9. A press comprising a shifting head, a
movable abutment, a pressure device arranged between the movable abutment and I the shifting head for applying final pressure to said head, the abutment being movable independently of the pressure device,
and means for independently supporting the 10 abutment and the pressure device.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses this first day of February 1909.
