Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7,
Applieatioaflled February 11, 1909 Serial No. 477,879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR W. HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Filter-Presses, ofwhich the foli ing had therein to the accompanying drawin s, in which-- igure 1 is a side elevation of a filter press, a portion of the operating mechanism being shown in vertical sectional view; Fig. 2 a plan view, a portion of one of the heads bein /broken away to show oneof the compression rams; Fig. 3 a vertical. sectional view showing .acompression rain connected directly to the jack screw; and Fig. 4. a
similar view showing another arrangement of ram directly connected to the jack screw.
Heretofore ordinary jack screws have been used to force the filter plates together and to \holdthem against the pressure of the'liquid pumped in between them. This form of press, while sim 1e in construction and readily and quick y operable, is unsatisfac tory in that it is difficult and very laborious to secure the proper pressure on the filter plates. In the hydraulic filter presses wherein a hydraulic ram is used to force the filter plates together the construction is complicated, and the operation is slowv and tedious, particularlythe operation of releasing and withdrawing the ram to permit of the separation of the plates andthe shifting ead. i
It is one of the niain objects of this invention to combine the jack screw system with the hydraulic system to secure ,the advantages of both systems. By my invention secure a rapid adjustment of the shifting head and filter plates by means of the jack screws and an adequate pressure 'on the plates by means of the hydraulic ram.
Another object of the invention is to so arrange the hydraulic compression apparatus that it will not interfere with the operation of the jack screw forthepurpose of adjusting the shifting head to the filter plates.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the thrust of the jack screw will be taken up directly by the compression head and the compression rams thereby relieved.
Other important objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
owing is a specification, reference behead 5..
' shown in the drawings nally through meshes with a gear 15 formed on the not as desired.
support or stationary head; 3 the shifting 5 head; 4 the horizontal supporting bars on which the filter plates and the shifting head are mounted. These bars connect together the stationary head and the compression 6 designates suitable supports for the stationary compression plate 2 and the compression head 5. These parts of the apparatus may be of any bein merel b wa of illustration. y y y ,Extending horizontally and longitudithe compression head is a ack screw which, at its inner end, en ages the projectlon 8 of the shifting head and on its outer-end carries the large hand Wheel 9. Thls jack screw extends through an openlng 10 in the compression head so that it may be moved freely through said head without rotation therein. Threaded on the ack screw near the inner side of the compression head is a horizontal cross-head 11. Also threaded on the jack screw between said cross-head and the compression head is a thrust block and lock nut 12. Journaled in suitable bearings on the up er side of the compression 'head is a short shaft 13 carrying at its inner end a small gear 14 which 8- riphery of the thrust block 12. On the outer end of the shaft 13 is secured a hand wheel 16. It is obvious that by rotating the shaft 13 the thrust block and lock nut will be rotated on the jack screw. The said thrust block is considerably wider than the gear 14 so that said thrust block may have a longitudinal movement on the jack screw desirable form, that and also with it without becoming disengaged from the gear 14.
In the compression head, on each side of the jack screw, are mounted two hydraulic rams 17 Whose operating ends are adapted to engage the cross-head 11, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. These rams are supplied with fluid b a pump 18 through pipes 19, said pump ein operated by means of a handle 20. It Wil of course, be understood that any form of pump may be employed and that said pump may be hand-operated or In order to prevent the ram plungers from being forced out of their cylinders 1 provide a means ffor arresting and preventing the operationof the pump when said plunping means.
termined ers have reached a predetermined position 1n their forward travel. This means "consists of an angle lever 21 pivoted on a crossbar 22 carried by the slde bars 4 of the press frame. The lever 21 is provided with -a sleeve 23, the arms of the lever being setioned that when said cross-head has een moved outwardly by the rams to a predeoint said lever arms will be engaged b t e cross-head and the stop arm 25 swun ownward to the pump handle. It will t us be seen that the accidental withdrawal of the ram plungers from their cylinders will be prevented.
It is, of course, obvious, that any suitable arran ement of levers and stop bar may be provi ed, it being only necessary that the cross head engage some form of pump-stop- In Fig. 3 the jack screw is directl connected to a ram l7 which is threa ed on said screw. This ram is provlded on its exterior with a lock nut 21 which, is adapted to be turned back against the compression head to relieve the ram of the thrust on the jack screw. The ram is formed with an outwardly extending guiding part, 22 which fits a corresponding aperture in the com-.
pression head; and the ram proper and the guiding part are provided w th packings 23 to revent the escape of the pressure fluid, sai fluid being delivered through pipe 24.
In the construct-ion illustrated in Fi 4 the ram 17 is threaded directly on the ack screw and is provided with a lock'nut and thrust block 25. The ram is formed with an internal recess or chamber 26 into which projects a tubular guiding part 27 formed integral with the compression head. Packings 28 are provided to prevent the escape of the compression fluid, which fluid is sup- 7 plied through pipe 29.
In the operatlon of the apparatus the filter plates are brought together in the.
usual manner and the jack screw is rotated to bring the shifting head against said plates. The screw is operated by means of the hand wheel 9 to bring the filter ,plates and the shifting head into close contact. It
is not intended that any considerable pres sure shall be applied by means of the jack screw, said screw being used for the purpose of rapidly bringing the shifting head into positlon and for bringing the filter plates and said heads into close contact.
'When the shifting head has been properly open the press the rams are a positioned by. means of the jack screw the required pressu'reis pumped into the rams, the operatin ends of the rams engaging the cross-hea 11 and forci-ng'the jack screw forward to bring the desired pressure on the shifting head. When this pressure is secured the thrust block 12 is rotated by means of the gear 14 and hand wheel 16 to shift said thrust block back against the compression head, thus locking the screw jack and relieving the rams of the thrust of the shifting head. It Wlll thus be seen that I combine the convenience of the rapidly movin r jack screw for bringing the shiftinghea d' and the filter plates into close contact with the efiiciency of the hydraulic ram for securing the desired pressure on the shifting head and the plates. When it is desired to ain operated to force forward the cross hea and the jack screw and thereby relieve the thrust block and lock nut of the thrust of the shifting head. The thrust block is then run out on the jack screw by means of the hand wheel 16 and the gear 14. When the thrust block is thus free from the compression head the ressure in the rams is released and then the ack screw is operated to release the shifting head. A From the foregoing it is manifest that I provide a simple and eflicient means for securing the desired pressure on the shifting headand the filter plates which combines the advantages of the old jack screw type of press and the hydraulic type, and eliminates the disadvantages of both of said types of presses.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
