Be it known that I, EDSON L. ALvoRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVeskan, in the county of Wallace and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf or Colt VVeaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to calf or colt weaners and is designed particularly to construct a device of this character that will be humane, inflicting little if any injury upon the female animal or the calf or colt.

A further object of this invention is to construct a device which will readily yield when any pressure is applied to the spikes,

and which is simple and inexpensive to construct.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, specifically claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a muzzle or weaner constructed in accordance with the present invention, parts thereof being in section; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the casings containing the spikes removed and illustrating the specific construction of the nose band and means of securing the head stall thereto; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the means whereby the nose band is ad j usted to various sizes of animals; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the spike setting forth the specific construction thereof; Fig. 5 is a section taken along 5-5 of Fig. 8.

Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

The weaner or muzzle forming the subj ect-matter of the present invention comprises a nose band constructed of sheet metal, such as tin, with the central portion broad and converging to the approximately straight ends 11 and 12. The end or terminal 12 having formed thereon longitudinal extending flanges 13, said flanges being bent inwardly, is adapted to receive the extremity 11 and permit the same to reciprocate therein. The terminal 11 is pierced by a series of openings 14 which are adapted to register with an opening 15 in the flanged terminal 12 when the band is adjusted to the i nose of the calf or colt. A pin or other suitable fastening means is placed in said registering openings and forms a secure locking means for retaining the nose band in place.

A series of openings 16 pierce the nose band about the central portion, each of said openings being surrounded by a casing 17, said casing at its outer extremity having the flange 18 formed inwardly thereon. A spring pressed pin 19 is adapted to reciprocate in each casing and has each extremity thereof pointed as at 20, one of said points 20 being adapted to be projected at the opening 16 in the band while the other projects outwardly from the casing. A centrally disposed circular lug 21 is formed on the pin or spike 19 and is adapted to rest normally against the inner side of the flange 18. The pin is retained in this position by the spring 22 exerting a pressure between cular lug 21. To provide a means whereby the nose band may have secured thereon the head stall 23, an elongated rectangular opening 24, in which the head stall is secured in the usual manner, is made use of.

In operation the device is adjusted and fastened to the nose of the calf or colt in a manner similar to that of a bridle or halter. It will-thus be seen that when the animal attempts to nurse the spikes will come in contact with the female animal and remind her of the presence of the calf or colt. At the same time the pressure exerted on the outer extremity 20 of the spike 19 will cause the same to act against the pressure of the spring 22 and project the inner extremity 20 against the nose of the calf or colt which will cause it to cease nursing. This construction will cause the female animal to draw away from the calf or colt and also cause the calf or colt to graze, which process after being repeated several times will completely wean the calf or colt.

Having thus described my invent-ion, what -I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a nose band having a series of openings therein, of casings surrounding said openings, spring pressed spikes adapted to be projected outwardly from said casings, said spikes being movable to contact with the wearing animals nose, and means whereby said band may be adjusted to various sizes of animals.
