production, possesses -to be'carried in such position W ILLIAM IB. HUGHES, OF C'LEVELAND,'OHIO.
NUMBER-PLATE SUPPORT FOR VEHICLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Number-Plate Supports for Vehicles, of which the followdrawings.
This invention relates to supporting devices or brackets such as are adapted more especially for use with automobiles to support the number or license plates thereon.
The general objects of the invention are to provide a bracket or support of this kind which, While comparatively inexpensive, of a wide range of adaptability for use with such plates and vehicles whereby it may be applied to various styles of supports carried-by the vehicles and will insure eflective illumination of the plates by the lamp. 1
\Vith the above general objects in view, the invention may be further defined as-consisting of the combinations of elements cmbodied in the claims hereto annexed and illustrated in the drawings forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 represents an elevation'of my bracket, showing the lamp and number plate thereon; Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the bracket and license plate, showing the bracket applied to the vehicle arm, and Figs. 3 and 4 represent respectively a top plan view and, an elevation of the bracket.
Describing the parts by reference characters, 1 denotes the bracket generally, ythe same comprising a base.2 provided at one end with a socket adapted for application to.
a plurality of supports and a socket for the license plate carrier and having at the opposite end a post for the lamp.
The post is designated at 3 and is carried at the end of a curved member 4 of the base, whereby the post is offset with respect to the remainder of the base, enabling the lamp as to properly illuminate the number plate. the base opposite the post 3 is provided in its lower portion with a double socket. This socket comprises a slot 5, havinga transverse enlargement at its central portion, as shown at 6. The slot 5 is adapte to receive a flat or elongated plate projecting upwardly from is a full, clear, and exact description,- re erence being had to the accompanying,

the arm 7, which arm is generall carried by the vehicle. -The transverse enargement 6 at the central portion of theslot is for the reception of a .post 8, which may be carried by the arm 7 instead of the flat or elongated plate. This enlargement comprises two oppositely located notches, one of which is rounded and the other isangular, as clearly shown in Fig. ,3. From the side of the socket containing the rounded notch, there projects a boss 9, the boss being threaded for the reception of a set screw 10 which is adapted'to engage either the elongated plate or the post 8 to retain the bracket in place 4. From opposite sides of the vertical socket just described there projects upwardly two arms 11, and these arms carry at their 11 )per ends a'horizontal socket 12. The end 0 the horizontal socket which is adjacent to the post 3 is provided with an inwardly proecting flange 13 which forms a stop for the inner end of a rod 14. The socket 12 is provided with an internally threaded boss 15, for the .reception of a set screw 16 by means of which the rod '14 is held in place in said socket. p
17 denotes the number plate, the same being of any standard type and being shown as rovided with a pair of elongated slots 18 beneath the upper edge thereof. This plate is supported from therod H'by means of a pair of socketmembers 19, which are sleeved upon the rod and'each are provided Each of the socket member-s19 is provided with a projection 21 having airclon ated:v
face adapted to bear against, and conform-'- ing in shape to, the rear face'of the number plate (the term roar, bemgi here employed with a set screw 20 by means of which they may be clamped securely :to said rod.
to designate the side of the plate which is opposite the number-bearing side). The projection21 is reduced in thickness at its upper end and is provided with a bore'for the reception of a bolt 22 said bolthavin a head adapted to bear against the front 0 the plate and being providedwith anut 23 b means of which the'plate may be securely clilmpeed to' the elongated'face of the socket mem I 24 denotes a lamp, which is shown as mounted upon the post 3, being secured thereto by means of. a set-screw 25. The ofl'setting of the post 3 the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3 enables the lamp of any approved type, i
" 19 are adjustable,'both longitudinally and to be supported in roper position to illuminate the number p ate. It will be observed that the point at which the bracket is supported is intermediate betweenthe number late and the rod 14 onone side and the amp 24 on the other side. By this construction the lamp and lateoserve to balance each other, thereby re ieving the parts of the bracket from unnecessary strain. It will be observed further that the socket members rotarily, with respect to the rod 14. This accommodates my device for various styles and lengths of lates and also enables the plates to be tilted at the most effective angle with respect to the lamp for illumination and inspection. The sha e of thesocket '19 enables the rod 14 to be orced intoengagement with the socket members a! t'wo -lines of contact, whereby the plate may se-' cured against tilting or rotating on the rod 14after the screws 20 have been ad'usted.
