To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GIUSEPPE CELLI, subject of Italy, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilate-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to kitchen and table articles and particularly to a device adapted to lift plates, pans and the like for the purpose of removing them from an oven while in a heated state and the device is applicable primarily for lifting pie plates and the like.

An object of this invention is to provide novel means which may be adjusted to operate in conjunction with plates of diderent sizes, means being provided for automatically adjusting the movable part of the device whereby it will close or move with respect to the stationary portion thereof, thereby embracing the pan or article to be lifted.

A further object of this invention is to provide a lifter of the character noted which will possess an unusual range of adjustment and accommodate pans or the like of different heights as well as those of different diameters as heretofore stated.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective of a lifting implement embodyin the invention; and Fig. 2, illustrates a side elevation.

In these drawings 3 and 4 denote two rectangular frames each of which has an extension forming a handle, the said frames being separated by the intervening posts 5 which are rigidly connected to the frames in order to insure a rigid structure. As shown by Fig. l the posts at the rear end of the frame are separated to a considerable degree leaving a space therebetween sufficient to receive flanges of plates or other culinary articles which are usually employed for roasting, baking or the like.

The extensions of the frames which form the handle are encircled by a band 6 which strengthens the structure and acts as a guide for a movable member hereinafter described. The band is of preferably relatively heavy material and may be secured to the extensions in any desired manner as by solder or the like.

The culinary articles are held in engagement with the ends of the frame by a clamping member which is slidable with relation to the said frames and the said clamping member is formed preferably of a single piece of metal as for instance wire of suitable gage bent to form a loop which embraces the two frames and which is slidable on the said frames. rlhe clamping member is formed as stated of asingle piece of metal, the central portion of which is shaped into a member 7 which forms a support for the culinary article, the said bar having at its ends side portions 8, which stand at an angle to the bar 7. The side portions lie outside of the frames and have extensions 10 which converge transversely of the frames but on a plane slightly above the upper frame. A clamping member or the material forming the clamping member has parallel portions l1 which are slidable between the extensions of the frame and inside of the retaining band 6, and the said extension is thereby guided by the band and by the frame as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. l.

The clamping member is manipulated by the operator when an obj ect is to be grasped by the carrier by pulling on the extension and drawing the clamping portion to the position shown in dotted lines or to any position intermediate the full line position of the clamp and the ends of the frames. When the forward ends of the frames are applied to the article to be lifted and the clamping member is retracted, the said clamping member will be in position to move into engagement with the flange or body of the article to be lifted and in order to insure the clamping action automatically, I provide a spring l2, on each side of the assembled frames. One end of the spring 12 is anchored to a post 5 and the opposite end thereof is connected to the side portion of the clamping member, the said spring acting to draw the clamping member toward the outer ends of the frames.

I claim- 1. In an article lifting implement, frames having extensions forming handles, posts for connecting the frames a securing band encircling a portion of the extensions, a clamp ing member slidable on the frames and having parallel portions slidable. in the band and between the extensions of the frame and springs for exerting pull on the said clamping member.

In an article lifting device, parallel frames posts connecting the frames, a clamping member having a bar slidable under one of the frames and having side portions embracing the said frames with extensions of the side portions forming an operating handle, and springs secured to the posts and to the clamping member for exerting a pull on the latter,

In an article lifting device, frames approximately rectangular in plan and exthe said frames and having converging por tions terminating in parallel extensions, the said extensions being slidable between the extensions of the frames, andsprings having -ends anchored to posts and their opposite ends connected to the sides of the clamping member and adapted to exert a pull on said clamping member.
