IMPROVED SNOW-PLOW.
The Schedule referred to in these. Letters Patent and making part of the same.
T 0 whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MYRTILLUS A. ORAVATH and ISAAC M. CRAVATH, of the city of Bloomington, countyof McLean, State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snow-Plows; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the drawings, Nos. 1 and 2, making a part of these specifications, in which No. 1 is a perspective view.

The frame A is constructed with a head-block, corresponding to the head-block of the locomotive, to which it is attached by means of bolts, and with a of clamp j, and operated by hand-wheel f on shaft g, said shaft being held in position by step in arm I, and
passing through clamp j and brace c.
A worm-pinion, (-r, is attached to the top of uppurpose of switching the points of the plows to either side, and holding them in any desired position.
The plows, thus constructed, are hinged to frame A by means of two journal-boxes, a a, oneattached to the front of the head-block, and the other to the front of the foot-block, by means of bolts. The revolving plows D D are attached to frame A at an angle of about twenty degreesand in such position as to bring the convex sides near the rails on the inside, and so as to project below the surface of the rails sufficiently to clear the grooves and prevent the locomotive from leaving the track.
The operation is as follows:
The operator stands on" the platform, made by coupling the head-block of the plow with the headblock of the locomotive. The plows are placed with the points at equal distances from the rails. The curved braces J J are expanded, and a spring-pin, o, is inserted. In case of a high bank on one side of the track, the snow may all be thrown on the,opposite side by switching the points of the plows toward the bank, by means of the hand-screw F, until thecu-rved means of braces.
Two uprights are framed through the head-block and'foot-block, in such position that the horizontal screw 1*, at the top, and the inside bearings of revolving plows, D I), at the foot, are received.
The mould-boards B B and'O O are mitred at the point, and shaped like those in common use, and are fastened to arms of unequal lengths by means of bolts at the points.
The mould-boards B B are fastened to short arm H by meansof curved brace 11.
he mould-boards G (I are cut off near the point, and are fastened to long arm I by means of hinged joint K. The mould-boards G G are longer than mould-boards B B, projecting forward on either side; they are also raised above them, so that the share or cutting-edge is nearly level with the top of mouldboards B B. The rear of said mould-boards is attached to long arm I by means of curved braces J J.
The arms H and I are keyed to upright I). Said arms are coupled together by means of coupling-brace 1;, and are also attached to said upright by means of brace c.
The curved braces J J are each provided with a rack, which meshes into and is operated by pinion L. Said rack and pinion are confined to arm I by means into a station, or when desired, the mould-boards O C are drawn in, by means of the rack and pinion L, as shown by dotted lines. The foot of the operator is placed on the spring-pin 0, and the hand on the wheel f.
\Vc claim- 1. The construction and arrangement of mouldboards, with hinged joint-s near the point, and with rack and pinion for operating the same, in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
. 2. The construction and arrangement of plows with horizontal arms II and I, upright shaft E, journalboxcs a a, worm-pin G, and horizontal screw 1*, for operating the sanic,.in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
