KNOCKDOWN CIGAR-BOX.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALCOLM HUTCHIN- sort, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Knockdown Cigar-Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knockdown boxes, shipping cases and analogous containers, more particularly to knockdown cigar boxes, and has for an object to provide a device of this character in which the parts are so constructed as to reinforce the ends and form a support for the lid or cover while bringing the outer portions of the edges of the end walls flush with the upper surface of the lid or cover.
Another object is to provide a device of this character made from a single blank of fiber board so cut as to form the sides, ends, bottom and cover of the box in one continuous piece which may be veneered with wood if desired, the veneering, binding and labeling of the box being done while the boxes are in the flat, thus enabling the manufacturer to ship the boxes in the fiat and economize in car space and, therefore, freight charges.
With these advantages and other objects in view, which will appear in the following specification and be set forth in the claim, my invention embraces the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

In carrying out my invention, I employ a blank made from suitable thick and durable fiber board, all the parts of the blank being formed in a single integral sheet. The fiber board best adapted for the purpose should be built up of several thicknesses cemented together by some tasteless and odorless adhesive, such as silicate of soda, which would render the box impervious to moisture and deleterious substances and would also stiffen the sheet. The sheet is shaped to provide a rectangular main portion having a rectangular extension projecting from one of its side edges. The blank thus shaped is scored along the side edge from which the said extension projects and also on lines parallel with its side Specification of Letters Patent.

and end edges, the scoring parallel with the end edges of the blank being on lines coincident with the end edges of the extension, all of which is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The blank thus shaped and scored presents a bottom portion 1, from which project integral end flaps 2 and side flaps 3 and 6, the extension on the side of the blank projecting from the side flap 6 and constituting a lid or cover 8.
The longitudinal scores are carried entirely through the body of the blank between the transverse scores and the end edges of the blank so as to form incisions or cuts 11 and 12 whereby semi-end flaps 4. and 5 will be provided. The said semi-end flaps 1 and 5 should be of such dimensions that when they are folded inward over the bottom 1 their edges 9 and 10 will meet and the end flaps 2 when folded up outside the semiend flaps will have their edges 13 projecting slightly above the edges of the semi-end flaps so that ledges 7 will be provided upon which the ends of the cover 8 may rest be tween the edges of the end flaps, the upper surface of the cover being flush with the upper edges of the end flaps and the front edge of the cover resting upon the upper edge of the front side flap 8. To provide the ledges 7 the distance between the longitudinal scores and the adjacent edges of the blank is less than the distance between the transverse scores and the edges of the blank adjacent thereto so that when the blank is folded the upper edges of the end flaps 2 will project above the upper edges of the side flaps 3 and 6 and the upper edges of the semi-end flaps 1 and 5 a distance equal to the thickness of the cover and the side flaps and the semi-end flaps will have their edges in the same plane.
To fold the blank into box form, as shown in Fig. 1, the end pieces 1 and 5 are first bent upward so as to stand at right angles to their respective sides 3 and 6. The sides are then folded toward each other into upright position, the end edges 9 and 10 of the semi-end flaps abutting against each other and the bottom edges 11 and 12 rest ing on the bottom of the box. The end flaps 2 are now bent upwardly and cemented to the outer faces of the ends, and being slightly greater in width than the width of the said ends will extend beyond the upper edges thereof a suflicient distance to bring the upper edge 13 of the end flaps flush with the upper surface of the lid or coverwhen the box is folded and closed.
To enable the fiber board to be bent to form the box, it will be necessary to score or crease it where the bend is to be made and the seams may be reinforced with paper or fabric 14 to give the box a smooth exterior at the intersection of the sides, bottom and ends. To give a neat and finished appearance to the box, the sides, ends, and cover are providedwith an ornamental border 15,
and are alsoveneered with paper or wood 16 to imitate-"Spanish cedar, the 'veneering, binding and labeling of the box being done while the fiber boardis in'the flat, so that all that isnecessary to finish the box is to fold the different parts together and cement the ends.
It will thus be seen fromthe-above constructionthat the end pieces which are integral with the sides arereinforced by the end extensions formed integral with the bottom, that these extensions are sufficient in w-idth' toextend above theend pieces when the parts are foldedtogether and are flush w iththe upper surface of the same when the box is closed, also that the semi-endflaps form a ledge for the cover torest upon, and
finally that the cover when closed rests upon the saidledge, and is clamped between the said extensions to' brace and stiffen the box to resist all racking strains to which it may be subjected. 7
The cover 8 of the box may be fastened down,when the box is folded together and filled, in any preferred-manner, but a simple and effective fastening can be made of a pair of wire studs 17 securedto the upper edge of: the front side?) of the box and proj ecting upward to engage correspondingly arranged openings ISformed in-the cover ofthe box adjacent the front edge thereof,
theprojecting ends being bent over to engagethe upper surface of the cover and hold the same securely locked in place.
'Fromthe foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw- .ings, it is thought that the construction and operation of my invention may be easily understood without a more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made without. sacrificing any ofthe advantages or departin from the spirit of the invention.
