COMBINED HEATING SYSTEM FOR A PLURALITY 0F BOILERS.
Application filed. October 11, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SGHWAB, of Winnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Heating Systems for a Plurality of Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined heating system for a plurality of steam boiler furnaces and the objects of my invention are to provide means for economizing fuel and obtaining all the heat units out of the products of combustion of the fire in a furnace.
It is well known that at present, a great quantity of the heat units of combustion pass up the chimney of a steam boiler furnace, and it is proposed in the present case to save these heat units by passing the products of combustion from the furnace of one boiler through a second boiler, the said second boiler having no fire in the furnace thereof and being heated wholly by the products of combustion from the furnace of the first boiler.
In practicing the invention, a plurality of steam boiler furnaces are suitably connected together by conducting means in such a manner that the products of combustion from the fire in the furnace of one boiler will pass through one or more additional steam boiler furnaces. The steam boiler furnaces are preferably provided with the usual smoke stacks and the conducting means having controlling valves therein, so that each steam boiler furnace may be used independently if desired.
The invention is more fully described and set forth in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a pair of steam boiler furnaces having my invention combined therewith, the section being taken on the line 22, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 3-8, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 4 i, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 55, Fig. 1.
It is evident that any number of steam boiler furnaces may be combined according to the present invention, and by way of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Serial No. 522,188.
illustration, I have shown the combination of two furnaces only.
Referring to the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4:, A and B represent two steam boiler furnaces of any usual or well known construction, and which in the embodiment illustrated are placed side by side, the front of one furnace being adjacent to the end of the next one. The furnaces A and B are each provided with the usual grate bars 0 C, and smoke outlet pipes D and E, the said outlet pipes for the purposes of the present invention being provided with suitable controlling valves 10 and 11 of any Well known construction. The boilers 0 and (Z are of the usual construction.
In accordance with the present invention, the rear of the furnace A communicates with a conduit F which leads to the front end of the furnace B, opening above the grate bars. In order that the products of combustion shall pass through this conduit instead of going through the flues of the boiler c, it is necessary to provide baffling means, and the form I have illustrated comprises a slidable plate 12 adapted in innermost position to out off communication between the furnace A and the boiler c, the said plate being boiler furnace to be used in the ordinary way.
In order to permit the steam boiler furnaces to be used in the ordinary way, it is necessary, in addition, to provide means for closing the conduit F. The means I have illustrated for this comprise a slidable plate 13 extending through the masonry and adapted in innermost position to close the conduit F.
The top of the front of the boiler d is also placed in communication with the rear of the top of the boiler c by means of a suitable conduit G.
When the steam boiler furnaces are to be heated by a single fire, the plate 12 is moved to innermost position and the plate 13 is withdrawn and a fire is lighted in the furnace A. The products of combustion travel over the baffle wall of the first furnace, passing beneath the boiler a and imparting part of their heat to the same. They then pass through the conduit F into the front end-of the furnace B and then pass over the bridge wall of the furnace B, to the rear end, then through the flues of the boiler cZ back to the forward end then they pass through the conduit Gr into the rear end of the boiler 0. They then pass through the fiues of the boiler 0 and out through the smoke pipe E, the'valve in which has been opened, the valve in the smoke pipe D of the steam boiler furnace B being Closed.
It will be seen that the distribution of heat effected by this system is very uniform, because the first boiler is in contact with the products of combustion at first, when they are highly heated, for a short time. The second boiler is then in contact with them for a longer time, and finally the first boiler is in contact with them for a short time again, thereby equalizing the distribution of heat.
l/Vhen it is desired to use the steam boiler furnaces independently, the plate 13 is moved to innermost position, and the plate 12 is withdrawn, and the valves in both smoke pipes opened. It is not necessary to close the conduit Gr because the ordinary draft through the smoke pipe will prevent any flow through this conduit.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention within the scope of the claims could be made without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is to be understood that the type of steam boiler furnace shown is only illustrative and the invention may with facility be adapted to any type of boiler, whether bricked in or asbestos covered,--stationary or marine, etc. 7
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with two steam boiler furnaces disposed adjacent to each other and provided with boilers, of conducting means connecting the rear end of one furnace in one steam boiler furnace with the front end of the furnace of the second steam boiler furnace and conducting means connecting the front end of the second boiler in the steam boiler furnace with the rear end of the boiler in the first steam boiler furnace and means preventing the products of combustion in the furnace of the first steam boiler furnace from passing from the furnace of the same into the fiues of its own boiler, whereby the products of combustion will be forced to pass from the front to rear of the first furnace, then from front to rear of the second furnace and then successively through the fines of the boilers.
2. The combination with two steam boiler furnaces disposed adjacent to each other and provided with boilers and having the head of one furnace adjacent to the rear end of the other furnace, of conducting means connecting the rear end of one furnace with the front end of the second furnace, conducting means connecting the front end of the second boiler with the rear end of the first boiler, and means preventing the products of combustion in the first furnace from passing into the fines of the first boiler, whereby the products of combustion will be forced to pass first, beneath the first boiler to the rear end of the same, then pass from the front to the rear of the second boiler, then through the fines of the second boiler and then through the fines of the first boiler.
3. The combination with two steam boiler furnaces disposed adjacent to each other and provided with boilers, of conducting means connecting the rear end of one furnace with the front end of the second furnace, conducting means connecting the front end of the second boiler with the rear end of the first boiler, baffling means for preventing the products of combustion in the first furnace from passing into the fines of the first boiler, whereby the products of combustion will be forced to first pass beneath the first boiler to the rear end of the same, then pass from the front to the rear of the second boiler, then through the fines of the second boiler and then through theflues of the first boiler, and means for Withdrawing the baffling plates and closing the conducting means to enable the steam boiler furnaces to be used independently.
4. The combination with a pair of steam boiler furnaces boilers therein each having suitable flues therein, of means for conducting products of combustion passing beneath the first boiler to beneath the second boiler, then through the flues of the second boiler and thence through the flues of the first boiler, the second steam boiler furnace adapted to have no fire therein.
5. The combination with a pair of steam boiler furnaces placed side by side and provicled with boilers, of means preventing the products of combustion in the first furnace from passing into the fiues of the first boiler, conducting means conducting said products of combustion to beneath the second boiler and conducting means permitting the passage of the products of combustion from the second boiler to the fines of the first boiler after they have passed through the second products of combustion of a single fire beneath all the boilers and then successively through the flues of the boilers.
7. The combination With a plurality of steam boiler furnaces each having separate Water heating means, the furnaces of the boilers all adapted to be idle, except one, of means for conducting the products of combustion of the active furnace through the 10 entire lengths of the idle furnace or furnaces and then successively through the Water heating means of all the steam boiler furnaces.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
