HARVESTER BUTTING ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. KULLANDER, citizen of the United States, residing at Kensington, in the county of Douglas and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvester Butting Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harvesters and has special reference to an improvement on the bundle tying attachment used in connection with the same.
An object of this invention is to provide means in conjunction with the bundle tying attachment of a harvester to hold the bundles firmly during the operation and to prevent the scattering of the grain comprising the same.
Anoth'er purpose of this invention is to construct an attachment of this nature by the employment of which the bundles will be delivered in a compact form and be prevented from being broken as the same is delivered from the tying mechanism.
Heretofore it has been common for the bundles to engage the ejector arms while the same is being thrown from the platform of a harvester, and this invention has for a further object the eliminating of this feature wherein the bundles are frequently broken and caught in the apparatus where they frequently stop the operation of the complete machine.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan View of the improved device having a bundle disposed upon the same. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section adjacent one end of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the spring arm connection, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the connection disclosing a slight modification in the proportions of the same.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates the platform which is employed in connection with harvesters of common formation and which is provided adjacent one edge thereof with a bar 11 longitudinally disposed thereon and supported in such position by a bracket 11*. The improvement comprises a pair of spring arms 15 which .are adjustably secured upon the bar 11 and which are adapted for engagement over the bundle disposed upon the platform 10. Each of the spring arms 15 comprise a metallic rod which is formed of resilient material and which is provided upon the inner extremity with a helical portion 16 to further the resiliency thereof and by means of which the same is attached to the bar 11. The free extremity of the helical portion 16 is bent laterally upon itself to form a loop '21 through which is passed a clamping bolt 17 carried by the bar 11. The clamping bolt 17 carries an arcuate plate 18 which is provided upon its inner concave surface with two longitudinal grooves 19 into which'are adapted to be engaged the upper faces of the arms of the looped extremity 21 formed upon the helical portion 16. The clamping bolt 17 is also provided with a nut 20 which is adapted for engagement against the upper face of the plate 18 to frictionally engage the plate upon the looped portion 21. The outer extremities of the spring arms 15 are curved upwardly for the purpose of preventing the engagement of the bundles thereupon and for the purpose of admitting of the even displacement of the same.
From the curvature of the ejector arms 13 the same are prevented from catching in the bundles as the points of the same extend backwardly when moving the bundles from the platform and the lateral curving of the same presents a broadened bearing surface to insure the engagement of the arms 13 against the sides of the bundles and not to bear to any great extent at any one point.

In positioning the spring arms 15 the helical portions 16 are engaged about the bar 11 and the loops 21 are secured about the clamping bolts 17. The plates 18 which are centrally apertured, are engaged over the clamping bolts 17 and rested upon the loops 21 engaging the grooves 19 upon the arms of the loops. The nuts 20 are now revolved and caused to bind the plates 18 against the loops 21 and to frictionally engage the inner faces of the loops 21 against the upper faces of the bar 11. When it is desired to adjust the tension of one of the spring arms 15 the plate 18 is disengaged from the loop 21 and the helical portion 16 is slightly revolved in order to slide the loop 21 beneath the plate 18. When the desired tension is obtained the plate 18 is again clamped in position and the arm 15 is in condition for further use.
Fig. 4: discloses a slight modification of the arm attaching means which consists only in the lengthening of the loop 21 to provide a greater contact surface for the plate 18 whereby a firmer grasp is obtained upon the bar 11.

A device as specified including a platform for the reception of bundles of grain, ejector arms disposed over said platform and having their outer ends curved laterally and also in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of said ejector arms While they are ejecting the bundle, thus forming a bearing surface for the bundles, and spring arms mounted above said platform and beneath said ejector arms, and having their outer ends curved upwardly and toward one another to present a sliding surface for engagement with the bundles.
