Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 22, 1909. Serial No. 518,930.
Patented June 21, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oberlin, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heat-Distributing Tops for Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved heat .dis-.
tributing top for gas, vapor, oil and other like stoves or burners, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which serves to distribute the heat from a single burner to difierent parts of the top so that a number of articles may same time by the heat from a single burner and an economy be thereby effected, the said invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanyin drawings :Figure 1 is a plan of a heat-distributing top constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same. p The top 1 is here shown as a flatplate of suitable dimensions and comprising a central portion 2 and side or end extensions 3 which project from opposite sides thereof and are here shown as' integral therewith. The central portion has an opening 4 and a grate or spier 5 extending over the same and serving to support a pot, vessel and each of the extensions 3 hasa similar opening 6 and a similar grate 7 Under the side extensions and here shown as formed integral with the top plate are inclined deflectors 8 which converge downwardly and, together with the side walls 9,
form passages 10 under the said side extensions which passages deepen inwardly and open toward each .other. The top plate is further provided at a point'under the opening 4 with a pair. of oppositely inclined downwardly converging deflectors 11 which form, together with walls 12, an upwardly widening heat distributing passage 13 under the opening 4:. The lower edges of the debe heated or cooked at the an or other spaced flectors 12 are spaced apart and a hinged damper 14 is mounted between them which may be turned to close or open the said space as may be required. At the inner end of the passage 10 are dampers 15 by means of which sa1d passages may be closed or opened. The said dampers 14-15 are respectively whereby they may be operated. A handle 18 is provided at one end of the top.
In use, my improved heat distributing top is dis osed with a central opening 4 above the urner so that the heat from the burner will be deflected into and through the side passages 10 and caused to pass through the openings 6 as well as to pass through the space between the lower ends of the deflectors 11 into the passage 13 and up through the opening 4 and thus all parts 0 the top will be heated from a single burner-and a number of diiferent articles .may be heated or cooked on the top./ By
closing the damper 14: and opening the dam ers 15, the major portion of the heat may e directed to the side extensions of the top. By closing the dampers 15 and opening the damper 1 1, the heat can be concentrated under the center of the top. Hence when the top is in use, the heat may be directed in'any proportion to any required portion or portions of the top. In the angle etween the walls of the central portion of the top are brace walls 19 which greatly strengthen the construction thereof and also serve in assisting to concentrate the heat under the center of the top. What is claimed is:-
provided with handles 16-17 1. A top for gas and other like stoves I having a central and side openings, a pair of inclined downwardly converging deflectors under the central lower edges spaced apart, and inclined deflectors under the side openings, each disposedsubstantially parallel with and from the adjacent deflector under the central opening.
